Now as for the gunsmoke...well just stay away from the east side while you're here unless you want a taste of Philly Quote: Originally Posted by Nrvsbride I'm an idiot and I keep forgetting to comment on this thread. Are you telling me there are no architectural engineers and/or scientists out there who can tell us what the best plan is? That is so frustrating! I remember I saw a Victoria Beckham special (her mini reality show) and her assistant got a guy (I think he was a firefighter or something) to teach her earthquake safety. He was teaching her to get under the desk! WTF? And I remember Posh was so scared like "Wtf do I do?" LOL. I would freak out if I was in an earthquake, tornado, or hurricane. Geez I'm starting to think Nyers don't have it that bad after all. We don't get any of that stuff. I'll take a mugging and a drive by shooting any day over an earthquake. Yesterday at work we were watching a montage of reality shows that were taping as the earthquake hit...we were all dying laughing at the people who were like "wtf is this?" as they ran around like fools. It was then I realized that I was working with Cali people...here we are making fun of them for tripping out when if some Kansas people saw us in a twister they would be making fun of us! I guess we all have our own things we can handle and things that scare the pants off of us!

It's a part of life out here and all you can do is try to know what/not to do when it happens. There has probably been an earthquake every day since you've been here but we don't feel them all, I'm sure we won't have another "big" one until after you leave...you're lucky you have somewhere to go back to, this is it for us...lol
  4. Shoot I missed this!!! You totally look happy (and great!) in your dress! It's almost time for you to do the deed.....how exciting! I remember that feeling
  5. The triangle of life is what Mandy's article was about, that one makes sense to me!
  6. yummy potato salad! It's similar to German potato salad with the bacon, it gives a great flavor. In Holland where my dad comes from they make it with diced green apples and ham - it's really tasty. Potato salad in general is great, you can do so many things with it. Our "basic" potato salad is potato, mayo, mustard, celery, garlic powder, celery salt, black pepper, onion, and egg. But the fancier the better. Sometimes I make a good one with capers and olive oil in place of mayo...I bet we all have variations on potato salad!
  7. LMAO! You have to laugh or you'll go insane! At least you'll always have copies of that pic. I like cute boys send one over this way

  9. Becks that salad sounds fantastic, my husband would love the meat factor!
  10. Omg those are stunning! Love your dress, I've never seen anything like it and it's beautiful. What a lovely wedding...congrats!!
  11. Mandy thank you so much for that article! #9 gave me chills because I know people whose relatives died in some of those cars. We were all worried that our family/friends were crushed because it was commute time and so many people drove that stretch home everyday. Phones were down so it was a long time to worry. We had been listening to radio but when the power finally came on a day or 2 later and we saw TV for the first time we were in shock. (if anyone wants to see how devastating it was google image search "cypress structure") Yari I would study the article Mandy posted, that falls in line with the most current info I've heard. I'm going to forward it on to my family/friends in CA. And as for "the big one" they've been talking about that since I was a kid too! I thought the big one was the 7.1 in '89 but they say a bigger one is in store in Norcal, Socal too...all we can do is wait.
  12. I've been gone from this section for too long because I just saw this! LOL Thanks for the links they are great
  13. #1 !!!! Beautiful, classy, and not overdone. The stones are blue right? Love the splash of color. And I agree, your dress is simple and those complement it wonderfully.
  14. Sounds like a fun outing! If we aren't cooking usually we'll go to a local deli we love and get pints of our favorite things. Also fried chicken travels well if you're feeling a little greasy, or grilled chicken with beans, rice, & tortillas. You can make chicken salad in pitas or lettuce cups, just grill/cook some chicken & cut it, & mix it with what you like. We love curry chicken salad with chopped cashews & grapes...okay I'm getting hungry! Do they sell jicama where you live? A good and easy salad is jicama, mango, and cucumber with some lime, chili, and red onion. We picnic a lot and I love making these sandwiches, if you end up going the sandwich route try them they are yummy! (recipe from Dean & Deluca) Goat Cheese, Avocado, and Turkey Sandwich on Nut Bread An ideal picnic sandwich, especially when a crisp, cool bottle of Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé is at hand. Ingredients: 3/4 pound tomatoes, finely minced (about 1 cup) 1 tablespoon finely minced scallion 2 heaping tablespoons finely minced cilantro salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 12 slices nut bread, each about 1/3 inch thick, 3 inches wide, 6 inches long (this is easiest to achieve if you cut the bread from a round loaf) 12 ounces goat cheese 12 thin slices of smoked turkey breast (about 1/2 pound) 2 medium avocados, peeled, pitted, and cut into thin slices Directions: 1. Mix together the tomatoes, scallion, and the cilantro. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 2. Spread each of the 12 bread slices with 1 ounce of goat cheese. Top 6 of the slices with a slice of smoked turkey. Top each turkey slice with one sixth of the tomato mixture, spreading evenly. Top that with a thin layer of avocado slices, seasoned with salt and pepper. Top with the remaining slices of turkey, and cover with the remaining 6 slices of bread (which have been spread with goat cheese). Cut each sandwich in half. Don't fret over slicing the bread exactly in this great sandwich recipe—or even the exact proportions of ingredients. What follows is a guideline. But any combination of these ingredients on any slice of nut bread is going to yield a great sandwich. Makes 6 sandwiches Also, someone sent me this NY Times picnic list, really good stuff and easy: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/02/dining/02mini.html

  21. Yikes Yari! I pulled out the emergency manual at work tonight to plan the best escape because I'm in charge of evacuating if we get a big enough quake...hoping we don't with me 8 floors up! I'm so glad your home is not damaged!

The general attitude towards it is not favorable but they shouldn't worry to the point of not going, just being aware of where they are should help.
