DPI is all relative if you don't know the resolution or dimensions of an image. DPI, or PPI is just how many dots or pixels per inch the photo will print at. You can have a photo that is 72dpi and 300dpi but have them be exactly the same file size. However, their dimensions or resolution will be completely different. For example I have a photo I'm looking at the is 72 PPI (pixels per inch) and the resolution is 2912x4368. If I print it out at 72PPI it will print at 60"x40" 60"x40" is huge and I don't want to print it that big so I go into image size to change the size. Plus if I print the photo that size and only 72 pixels per inch, it will be bad quality. When I go into image size and If I have the resample image box unchecked and change the PPI to 300, The new output print size is 9.7"x14.5". But, the resolution is the same 2912x4368. So, the file size didn't change. If I try to make a print bigger than 9.7"x14.5 inches at 300ppi, the image is going to start to look bad. If I try to change the resolution to 300 and the resample image box is checked, the resolution becomes 12133x18200. You're telling Photoshop that you want to try and keep this image's output size at 60"x40" but instead of 72ppi you want to make it 300ppi so it has to add a lot of pixels that aren't there. So, it does it's best at guessing and filling in pixels based on the color of the pixels it's putting the new pixels next to. Thus the image isn't the greatest quality because the new pixel information added isn't "real". I know it's all very confusing. Here is a good article that explains DPI and resolution. resolution and DPI explained

I think the general misconception is if you purchase the digital negatives or the photographer gives them to you, you can do whatever you want with them. I think in many cases the term "owning the rights" has been shortened from "owning the rights to make prints" and thus confusing the boundaries of copyright. I can't speak for all photographers but for me, and I think most of us would agree, when I give my clients the digital negatives, I give them permission to make prints from the files on the DVD. That doesn't mean they "own all the rights" to the images. They have the right to make prints and some other things I'll bring up later, but it doesn't mean they can give copies of the files to anyone. The bride & groom are my clients. They are the ones who have the rights to the files. Not Aunt Jane & Uncle Bob. Owning the digital negatives doesn't allow them to submit the images to a magazine for publication without my consent. In most cases clients of course would have nothing but the best intentions but not all publications will put a photo credit, or there could be a situation where I and possibly the client could be financially reimbursed for the use of the photo. It doesn't bother me at all if a client posts the photos online. The problem is that not everyone knows how to properly size photos for the web and just upload files large enough to make quality prints from. If somebody steals that image and makes prints from it, or passes it off as one of their own, I stand to lose some potentially serious income. This is why it's best to post a photo credit or watermarked images when posting them online. And, making sure they are smaller file sizes. There are many things we can't expect clients to understand about copyright / fair usage. Many people just don't know, so this is a great thread to educate all of us. Thanks for posting it. I hope this helps a little. :-) I look forward to hearing everyones thoughts

What is your favorite Hawaiian Island?
jthrasher replied to starchild's topic in The Big Island Weddings
I lived on the Big Island for 4 years so I'm probably a little biased in my opinion :-) There's so much more diversity on that island. And, it's not nearly as touristy. -

This is why I don't use Pictage to fulfill my print orders for clients now. Just to clarify Tammy, it's not Pictage that is charging you $7 for a 4x6. It's the photographer. Pictage is a company photographers use to sell their photos online. So they are able to set their own prices. Juan may sell his 4x6's for $7 others may charge less, and others more. The reason it's so high is because it's another way we photographers make money selling our art. You aren't paying for the photo paper, but what's on the paper. That's the value of the photo. Anyway, I agree, Pictage sucks. Their user interface is terrible too.

Question about wedding picture prints.
jthrasher replied to TammyB's topic in General Wedding Planning Information
Quote: Originally Posted by JPMO Thanks Jonathan! Another ? for you. Which matters more the paper or the printer/ink? Some tout Kodak papers etc. What should we really care about? Most professional labs aren't using ink. Prints are actually printed in a true photographic process so the prints are true photographs and not printed with ink printers. Paper quality is somewhat of a concern but that almost boils down to what your preference is. Glossy, matte, textured, etc. What really makes the difference is how the machines are calibrated, how often they are calibrated and how well they are maintained. I could run the same print through the same machine at two different times and it may come out different, if the machine isn't well maintained. The true test of a real professional lab is consistency. Some labs will print with slightly warmer colors and some cooler. Most professional photographers will find a lab they want to use and calibrate their monitors based on the calibration formula's the lab will give them. For me, i've found that the color I see on my monitor is pretty consistent with the lab I use. I'm not terribly picky about color but that's because the type of photography I do doesn't need me to be dead on with color. If I did more commercial photography I would need my color to be exactly how I see it on my screen when I print so my clients can have consistent color. Sorry... I'm sure that's more than you need to know. :-) Basically, I would suggest paying more for larger prints by using ordering through your photographer or by finding a pro lab. The paper is more your preference. -
Question about wedding picture prints.
jthrasher replied to TammyB's topic in General Wedding Planning Information
Just a little insight from a photographers point of view who used to use Pictage. I was a Pictage member for about 8 month and just quit a few months ago because I hated their interface, especially on the back end but the customer interface isn't great either. I also kept hearing horror stories about how other photographers clients would call with seriously messed up orders and very bad quality. I didn't want to take that risk with my clients so I terminated my relationship with Pictage. I didn't like that Pictage would send out emails like crazy to my clients as well. Yes, it might be nice to get a sale every now and then but some people we getting constant emails from them. Not cool. This year I wanted to focus more on quality control and branding and I wanted to make sure I knew what my clients were getting and be able to package the prints with my own packing, rather than having Pictage's name all over the packaging. So, I think there is a risk in quality. Most people are fine, but sometimes there are issues, Which usually get resolved. But, there are better options from an interface standpoint as well. I always tell my clients that for 4x6's, Costco or someplace like that is fine. But for larger prints, order through me because the lab I use has great quality. I would find a pro lab near you to order larger prints from. Hope this helps a little. -
The Ten Worst Wedding Reception Songs Of All Time

I have to admit though, I love JT so I'd take that one of the list for now. Maybe 5 years from now I might be sick of it, but for now I say keep JT spinning. -
Natalie & Lance (trashing of the dress)

Really great session Juan. You captured some great moments! Looking forward to seeing your next TTD session! -
I would definitely try and work it into the package you are getting with your photographer. I build my packages so that it saves you money over picking things ala carte. So, for me a TTD session might be $600 ala carte but I can put it in a package for either less or maybe slightly more BUT with another item added into the package free as well. make sense? WIth Jessalyn's TTD session, it was something that we added in but instead of paying for that we worked it out with an extra night or so at the resort. So, something like that might be an option as well. Here's one from Jessalyn's. I have another TTD tomorrow so I'll post those later.
