(course their are other reasons why I didn't want to change back to my maiden name) Well, you asked ... (kind long story ...) When we were divorced (in 2003!) I legally changed my name back to my maiden name. (funny thing is, I didn't realize this!) Since we did the divorce ourselves, no lawyers, all we did was fill out a packet of paperwork. One of the questions was "Do you plan to change your name, and if so, to what?" So I said yes, and put my maiden name. I had every intention of going back to my maiden name for a few reasons: 1) we work together and it just makes it easier if we have different names, and 2) i missed my maiden name (wished I would have kept it as a 2nd middle name), this was my chance to get it back!, and 3) I would have felt a little funny w/his name when we weren't married, but that's just me. Well, being the procrastinator that I am, I never really when through with changing my name back. So when I refinanced my house, which I had bought when we were legally married, I signed the papers as my married name and had to show proof of the divorce, since we were now divorced. They called me back the next day and said I had to come back and sign, since my name had changed back to my maiden name, and I had signed as my married name. I explained that I really never went through with changing it back. She corrected me, telling me that what I had done at the time of the divorce was legally binding - just filling in that one line of the divorce decree had changed my name back. Who knew! Keep in mind that this is now 2005 I think. I had lived about 2 years under an "old" name - I never realized how easy it was to go by a false name. Anyway - I still never went through and changed much to my maiden name, except my mortgage was now under my maiden name. Finally when paul and I decided to move back to MN (before we were engaged) I decided it would be a good time to switch everything over to my maiden name. I had also started a new job and had them hire me as my maiden name. When Paul proposed, I had about half the things as maiden and half as the married name. Now I am trying super hard to get everything into the maiden name so I can make a clean transition into the NEW married name. AHHHH! Anyway - so even if I wanted to go from old married name to new married name, not sure I could - since legally I have my maiden name now. Make sense? lol - sorry you asked?! whew

    Hi!

Hi Elizabeth - welcome! Let us know if we can help at all.
  16. it's different for everything. my drivers lisence is about 3-6 weeks, same with teh passport i think. some things you can just fill out online and it's almost immediate (these are the unofficial accounts, usually no security measures required). most places require that you send a certified copy of the name change document (credit cards, mortgages, banks, etc.). just takes patience!
  17. I definitely don't want to do one. If it turns out a lot of people don't make it - we may send out an email/evite and get everyone together for dinner - but no way to I want to plan anything else! Also, here's this thread ... http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t1977
  18. it would be nice if you could do the name change thing before you move, that way you could just set everything up in your new name, but I am not srue that's possible! i am just a little bitter right now since I am still going back to my maiden name, and i will just have to go to my new married name in a few months! it's just a pain - that's all!
  19. Technically you can change your name (any part of it) to anything you want at any time! I think it's more of a hassle if it's not for a marriage, divorce, etc. - but you can do it! For me (I am sure it's different in CAN) there are a crap load of forms - basically something different for every place you have to change your name (DMV, passport, credit cards, frequent flyer accounts, hotel accounts, financial institutions, job, etc.). Which is why I thought about not changing my at all this time (I've been married before) - but FI didn't love that idea!
  20. ahhh - it sounds like you've done a lot of the work already - whew! i chose not to do an AHR (at home reception) just because i didn't want to deal with it. i am sure it's going to be super expensive! are there any local Austin brides on here that can suggest a location?!
  21. i did want to add one thing though - are photographs important to you? if so - you may want to start looking a.s.a.p. for a photographer that you like, since you're getting married on a popular date!
  22. welcome laura. i've learned that this is one great thing about having a DW like this - typically the resorts or coordinators have these fabulous wedding packages that really involve very little thought on your part. you can make it be what you want - but i don't plan on doing much above and beyond what comes with my package!
  23. i haven't booked anything yet - i was actually planning on writing Nicole an email this week asking her when I should book stuff with her. i am thinking i'll want the mariachi band for the cocktail hour (and ceremony?) and then a DJ. i may also do the fire dancers - not sure yet. i wasn't worried about the boat either, but now i am wondering if i should be! i've never been sick on anything like that - and i've taken my share of booze cruises and regular ol' cruises! i will provide something for people to cover motion sickness, but hopefully it isn't an issue! for ladies that have already done this - does the boat provide the dramamine at no charge? that would be great if they did - one thing i don't have to worry about buying.
