  2. This is great! I love hearing from all the Riu brides and what they're going through. We also started at the Riu, then changed our minds and spent weeks researching other places only to end up back there. It just seemed to have the most to offer people for the money and for the date we wanted. My first choice was the Azul Beach Hotel because of its intimacy, but it's too expensive for our guests. I would love to go to the Royal Hideaway, but we are expecting a few children and it is also too expensive for the guests. I like that at the Riu Palace, guests can choose to stay at another (less expensive) Riu property. There is a $35 charge for them to attend the wedding, but my fiance and I are going to pay for it. Our travel agent gives us $25 for every guests who books through her so it will all work out in the wash. As of now most ppl have booked at the Palace anyway. We are expecting about 40 people, immed family and some friends. We are doing AHRs in our home towns when we get back. I'm so relieved to hear that the Palace is beautiful. It gets great reviews on tripadvisor.com. Just out of curiosity, Kim, why do you prefer the 3:00 time? We are booked for a legal ceremony at 3pm too, because we couldn't get the 4. I just thought the 4:00 would be better so we could do ceremony right into pics right into cocktails right into reception. I'm afraid 3:00 might give us too much of a lull between ceremony and reception. We are leaning toward the courtyard for the ceremony. We thought about the beach, but I read so many reviews that said it's not very private. Plus, I received pictures from a past Riu Palace bride who had her ceremony there and it looked beautiful. I was hoping to at least have ocean view during ceremony, but I guess you can't have everything. I'd like to have the reception set up on the beach but I'm not sure if they allow it or even if it's practical. I don't want to be eaten alive by bugs, and I'm not sure if they can set up music, etc. In fact, I'm not really clear on how the receptions work there. Can you have dancing? What are the table set-ups like? Can you bring your own decor? Do they have candles (we want tons)? Does anyone know these things?

I look forward to sharing stories/info/advice with you! I look forward to it, too! Congratulations, when did you get engaged?
  5. I have had some frustrations communicating with them as well. I recently did get a direct email address and phone number from someone there to speak with. I want to be sure I know what to ask before I call. I feel like I have so many questions and yet don't have a clue what to ask! Thank you, Tammy. I will let you know if I have any problems. Tara: have you gone down to the resort before? How did you pick it? I have never been to the area, but we wanted something beautiful and beachy and affordable. Plus our guests are from all over so this was sort of central. When is your wedding?
  6. Those are some great ideas, ladies. I'd love to do the spa thing, but many of my other friends have asked to be around helping the days leading up to the wedding, so leaving them out wouldn't be cool. The three special ladies are: 1. my brother's wife, age 26, 2. my fiance's sister, age 35 3. my roommate and best friend from college, age 32 I was thinking maybe having a private toast with them at some point and presenting them with a gift? What are you guys getting your BMs? I'd really like to honor them AT the ceremony or reception in some way though. Maybe getting them corsages? Is that cheesy?
  7. We are getting married April 23, 2007 at the Riu Palace Mexico. We are expecting approx 40 people or so. We will be having AHRs in each of our hometowns when we get back. We are so excited!!!!!!!! Melanie
  8. Thanks, I hope I do hear from the other Riu brides. Riu Palace Mexico was not my first choice, but it looks beautiful and it gets rave reviews on tripadvisor. We chose it because we thought it would be financially feasible for our guests and because it seems like it has something for everyone (nice rooms, beautiful beach, all-inclusive, close to playa, etc.) However, I am anxious about it since I've never been there and I can be picky. I really wanted something more intimate where we our wedding would take up the majority of the hotel and there would only be one wedding per day. The Azul Beach Hotel was my first choice, but it was just too expensive for everyone. I'm hoping other Riu brides can put my mind at ease that it's going to be amazing and also that we can help eachother navigate all the planning issues that are specific to this resort chain. As of now we are expecting about 40 people or so. Because not all of our guests could afford the Palace, some will be staying at the Riu Yucatan. It has been explained to us that guests staying at the Palace can use any of the other Riu properties for free, but guests staying at the Playacar can only use The Tequila and the Playacar. There is a $35 charge for them to attend the wedding/reception at the Palace, but we have told our travel agent not to mention the charge to the guests, that my FH and I will take care of it. We're thinking about doing a "rehearsal" dinner at the Playacar. That way everyone can attend for free. I was told by a former Palace bride that the properties are close enough to be able to meet up on the beach and that her Yucatan guests were actually able to sneak in at times to use the Palace pools. I have so many specific questions about the wedding/reception. I feel like the information on weddingsbyriu.com is so vague. Hs anyone been in touch with the wedding coordinator down there?
  9. I also feel strange about asking people who are spending the money to travel to Mexico to get us gifts as well. We are having immed family and close friends come down and have subtly told them not to get us anything. However, we are having receptions in our home towns after the wedding for the majority of our extended family and parents friends. We are still having showers and are registering for these people. I'm not looking forward to the showers because I hate being the center of attention. I am also uncomfortable registering because I hate asking for things, but I know these people are going to get us stuff anyway, so it might as well be stuff we need.
  10. Hi ladies, I am new to the forum. Our DW is at the Riu palace Mexico in April. We are having about 40 people. We decided to do only a best man and matron of honor because 1. It is such a small wedding and 2. We didn't want people to have to pay for all the other things (dress, make up, shoes, jewelry, showers, bachelorette parties, etc) on top of their travel costs. However, there are 3 ladies in my life whom I'd like to honor/acknowledge in some way. Any ideas? We won't be having any readings at the service and I think only one of them would be comfortable making a toast. Is there something else I can have them do or a gift I can get them or something? Any ideas would be appreciated.
  11. Hi, We are getting married at the Riu Palace Mexico on April 23, 2007. I was just wondering if there are any other Riu brides out there to share stories, advice, frustrations, pictures, anticipation, excitement, ideas, etc. Hope to hear from some of you! Melanie
  12. I am new to the forum and just starting to work on planning my wedding. It's so hard to get answers from the resort. Can someone walk me through the process of making my marriage legal? I'm having the hardest time understanding what we need to do before, while and after we go down to Mexico. We are getting married at the Riu Palace Mexico in April. I understand we need to bring our birth certificates translated and apostilled and bring our passports. Which do we do first, get them translated or get them apostilled? Where do we get this done? Do the passports need to be translated? Will they be keeping the documents or do we get them back? What do we have to do to make sure the marriage is legal when we get home? I'm so confused! Can anyone help me? Thanks!
