When did you begin planning?

Recommended Posts

We are newly engaged but we don't plan to marry until 2012. I've been browsing this website for the past few days looking for ideas but I feel like 2 years is so far away. Is is too soon to begin planning? How far in advance did you start? When did you set a date?

2 years isn't too soon, just make sure that whatever you begin planning.. you won't change your mind about. We started planning about 10 months in advance because that's the earliest our resort would take bookings for a wedding. Sometimes I feel like it wasn't enough time, but that's LARGELY to do with my procrastination! I started wedding dress shopping about 15 months in advance though! I was just too excited to put it off!

Good luck!

Well, I bought the dress 13 days after we were engaged wink.gif

We didn't really start rolling until this month, though (about eight months out) because it took *forever* to choose the resort. That was, by far, the most painful step of it all... Things are picking up speed now. We sent out the invitations last Saturday!

Happy planning :)

Thanks ladies.

DWBridetobe - That's what I was thinking. Most resorts and vendors wouldn't want to work on something that far out. I'd at least like to set a date. People keep asking me about it. I don't want to just sit idly for the next year waiting for the 1 year mark to come and then start planning. That's a waste of good time. Plus I know I'll be finishing up my last year of grad school then and preparing for comprehensive exams. I won't have as much free time then.

Melaina - This is OT but - Wow I went to school with a girl named Melaina some years ago. She's the only one I've ever known with that name. I always thought it was cute and unique. I already know what resort I'd like to get married with. Sadly I think I have ideas about everything after browsing this website for the past week or so.

Ha, that's awesome! I've never met another Melaina. And it's GREAT that you have ideas this early -- just imagine how amazing your wedding will be once you get there! Is there an option to move the date closer so you can really get rolling?

At 2 years out, I think you can definitely start planning. Just think, you have lots of extra time to thoroughly research resorts, take your time picking a dress, and generally having fun creating your DW.

Congrats on your engagement!

I guess you could say I started planning 2 years out, my wedding date will be 2 years to the day we got engaged. I knew I wanted to get married in March or april, and I felt like I needed more time than a little less than a year to plan, plus I wanted to finish school because I knew I couldnt work full time, go to school part time and plan a wedding! I just took my time and started researching places I wanted to get married, that took me quite a while to decide that, then we had to pick a date that would work out for us and for our families, and it wasnt until this June that I actually booked the place and now the planning is full force ahead lol!

I started researching resorts about 14 months out. Our hotel could take reservations 1 year in advance, so we did that as soon as possible and reserved our date 1 year out. I sent out STD e-mails on Valentine's Day, so people had just about a year's notice to start saving.

And I can't believe how quickly it's going! I'd certainly start researching resorts now -- there's a lot to do but it's lots of fun :)
