Sea lice eruption in Cancun/Playa area??

Recommended Posts

Thanks for your posts! Hmm, I may buy that protection stuff (I wonder if it really works?) and probably be very careful about going in the water before the wedding. Funny thing though, I have been in Cancun in June and had no problems whatsoever. I guess that attests how it's so random. Opice 34, let us know how it goes over the weekend!

I've lived here three years and I swim all the time. I've never been affected or know anyone who has had a problem with sea lice. It does happen and my homeopath suggegsts taking a bottle of vinegar with you to the beach. If they bite then pour the vinegar on it right away and you'll have no problems.

It caught my attention b/c I'm going with my older parents who don't aren't beach people, but another family member is getting them so excited about going to the beach and now they can't wait. I would hate for them to get all bitten up and have a bad experience!

Any thoughts on the likelihood of actually getting stung? And if so, of it being severe as opposed to a mild irritation?

I guess I'm wondering if I'm freaking out over nothing... I mean, lots of things CAN happen, it doesn't mean that you can worry about everything little thing. I'm really hoping that this is one of those things??

Hi P 402, I think you are right, I too am feeling that I'm freaking over something that is only a very small risk. I may still be a little wary going in the water for long periods of time before the wedding day, but other than that, I am going to try not to worry about it. I may still try to buy that protection stuff, but if I don't get around to it I won't be that upset :).

Hey! I just got back from Cancun on Sunday...last time I was in the water was Saturday (a few days ago). The entire time we were there I saw no "sea lice" nor heard anything about it. Water was beautiful (though not as clear as usual - but still a beautiful brilliant turquiouse)! I'd say you have no real reasons to worry. I didn't notice a thing, and I'm paranoid of creatures in the water!

This is gross, but I got sea lice bites in the ocean in Cancun once (in March.) Most of the hotels have little outdoor showers when you come in from the beach (so you don't get sand in their pool, etc.) I always use those if I've been swimming and haven't had a problem since. The best thing would be to go right to your room and shower after you've been in the ocean. The cream/treatments are also always available in the hotel shops and they work well.
