Wedding Cakes

$500 for the cake is ridiculous! I wasn't married at the Riu, but my resort had a local baker make my cake (2 tier, buttercream for 25 people) and I think it was $100. Not in Ochy, but $500 is way too much!

I think Chandlyn could definitely arrange to have your wedding cake be rum cake for you! When the Riu Ocho Rios first opened, they only offered rum wedding cakes, and a lot of the brides didn't like that, so now they offer all sorts of options. Chandlyn can definitely get you a rum cake, I bet she'd be happy to!

Kishalee,

I too am a dual-citizen Jamaican getting married at home, and I am having a traditional cake at my wedding. If you ask Chandlyn, I'm sure you can arrange to get a traditional cake at the wedding whether she gives you a referral or you bring your own cake. As a Jamaican, adding rum to the cake is just not going to cut it.

Last year my mom made my cousin's cakes for her wedding and brought it on property to the Sandals Royal Caribbean - they even dressed it at the resort for us for free - just ask nicely.

My mother won't be making my cakes this year, but a friend of her's who bakes for a living is making them. If you'd like her contact info PM me, and I'll pass it along. It won't cost you $500.

One other thing, another of my cousins who got married in JA actually travelled with her cakes from CANADA to the resort!! So it can be done, just carefully!!

I'm sure you can figure something out.

You are not alone........My dad is from Kingston and my mom is from Spanish Town (St. Catherine) and most of my family that is attending the wedding are Jamaican.......honestly, I don't like rum cake, but they would KILL ME if i didn't have traditional rum cake. I think this is a standard option at Riu. I am asking Chandlyn to split the layers.....one layer, traditional rum cake, the other layer, yellow....maybe.

Thank you very much. I am PMing you now. I don't like rum cake too much myself, but the entire family is really big on it and my mom is INSISTING on it. The family thinks it is a crime to have a jamaican wedding and not have the traditional cake.

I will definately check in with Chandlyn, but please send me the info on your mom's friend. I am not sure how good the RIU would do the Rum cake (though good to know it is an option) so its probably a good idea to check and see how much a good baker would charge.

I have been puzzling on this same issue for months. Both of my parents are Jamaican and not only is it going to be a rum cake for the wedding cake but they want to give rum cake as favors too!

At this point I am looking at packing a carry on suitcase with 2 cakes and 2 sheet cakes still in the containers. (which as you know is going to be heavy as heck)

If you can come up with something else let me know. My mother bakes cakes for a living and to not use hers would be insulting.

So another Jamaican bride to be here.

Not only do I have to have rum cake, but it also has to have fondant icing. That was not even an option for me so I'm not even going to argue with my mother (she's also from St. Catherines - Linstead).

My aunts and my mothers friends have made the cake and cut them up and are ready to boxed when I get down there. She is taking it down in a cooler type bag.

I spoke to Chandlyn about the wedding cake and that too must be black cake. I sent her a pic of what I want and she had to outsource it. I'll be leaving on Monday and will be able to tell you all about it when I get back.

The cake will cost me $350.

You are definitely right about how heavy the cake will be. I really really don't want to have to do this, and also have to bring a dress and all that OOT stuff too! Ugh not looking too good.
