My sister doesn't like my dress :(

I am so sad I could cry sad.gif

As some of you know, I fell in love with a $5K dress and decided against it. Since then, I have been hitting bridal stores all over the east coast and I ended up at this discount bridal store called Vows outside of Boston. They have TONS of sample dresses, some of which are still pretty expensive (one of my favs was a $3K Kenneth Pool)... anyway, I was checking out their discount rack and picked up a Reem Acra sheath gown that was marked $1400. I was pretty excited because it was simple and pretty and a great price. So I try on the dress, and the woman who was helping me into it looks at the tag and says "that's not right, this dress is only $499!" I was FLOORED!!! I really liked the dress because it was so perfect for a beach wedding in Mexico PLUS for $500, how could I say no

So I didn't get all crazy and buy it, instead I put 20% down (which I was told I could put towards a different dress if I changed my mind) and went home. The more I thought about it, the more I loved the dress and decided to go back for it. I showed my sister pictures of the dress online and she said it was really pretty, but in that tone that as her sister, i know meant "really? this is the dress?"

Now I dont know what to do. I know its not "the dress" but its really pretty, looks great on me, and i am super happy about the price... I know I am settling, but I am not willing to spend $5K on a dress... how do I get past this feeling that I am settling?

IF you arent "settling" then you wont have that feeling. Did you really love the dress before your sister said anything? If you did, then who cares what she thinks! My sister is not thrilled that I bought a used dress and didnt go out and spend 2 grand on something new, but thats not me. I would NEVER spend that kinda money on a dress I would wear once. I think theres nothing wrong with people wanting to spend that money, its their choice, adn I would never tell them not to, but to me it is a waste.

SO I say if you really love this dress then go for it!

Why not post some pics on here of you in it and we could make a poll?

Why isn't it "the dress"? It seems like you're crazy about it to me. We all want everyone to be 100% excited for us but in the end it's about how you feel. Other people will always disappoint. If you aren't happy with it then don't get it, but if you like it as much as it appears you do, don't not get it because she isn't as juiced as you. I bet it's lovely . . . have a pic?

Think about how you felt about the dress BEFORE your sister saw it. If you didn't feel like you were "settling" then, go for it. But if you felt like it wasn't "the dress" before your sister saw it, you should definitely keep looking. I know it's only 1 day and 1 dress, but you want to look back and LOVE your dress.

My sister was the same why when she seen my dress she said "oh that pretty" in her own tone that I knew what it mean't.. And the more I thought about my dress the more I loved it, so I went back a few days later and tried it on, and I knew then and there it was the one.. My point is, don't let your sister get in the way of the dress you love. However, if you are "happy" with it and not "thrilled" with it then maybe you should keep looking.

Ditto what everyone else said about if you loved the dress before your sis said anything, stick with it, if you were having doubts, then look around.

Everyone has different taste, if your sis doesn't like it, doesn't mean it's a bad looking dress. Plus, she just saw pics of the dress online not on you right? She might have a totally different opinion if she sees you in it.

When I look at pictures of me in the dress, I think of the beach and the warm weather and the sunset and I love it... it's just that after falling in love with another dress, I really needed some reassurance from my sister. Here are some pictures:

Don't mind anyone's opinions ... if you like it, buy it...

My dress does not look on me like it did in on the model on the designer's website.

My sister was unable to go with me and she said from the picture it looked like the dress Kate Hudson wore at the end in 'How to lose a guy in 10 Days'. As in, not wedding appropriate.

Of course I value her opinion, but I realized her taste in weding dresses is different from mine - and it's MY wedding!

And GEEZ, for that price... you are getting one heck of a deal. If it turns out you don't like it or find another one, I am sure someone will pay you every penny you spent on it for a Reem Acra.

Well, I don't have a sister so can't read too much into her opinion or how she expressed it.

But, as far as "settling" goes: I came down to 2 dresses in the end, with one being $1100 plus alterations fees more than the other. When I thought it over, yes, I liked that one better, but no I didn't like it $1500 better (when I knew that $1500 could buy part of our honeymoon or reception or jewelry or ...). Did I settle? Sure. Am I happy with my decision? Absolutely.

Do what makes you happy. She not the one wearing the dress. There are going to be things about your wedding that not everyone is going to like. I learned this at the very start when I chose my date and it continues to be true about almost every detail along the way.
