To Facebook or not to Facebook...

Recommended Posts

When we got engaged we called our parents and siblings and texted friends. We didn't tell anyone not to share so I guess one of fiance's siblings texted others and just a few hours later, a godmother posted something on fiance's FB wall. We removed it as soon as we saw it but fiance's mom was disappointed that when she called aunts and uncles later, they already knew. She wanted to surprise them!

I didn't try and call all my aunts and uncles, just sent emails out. But definitely called my grandmothers!

FI called his parents and siblings while I changed my status on FB (he doesn't have FB). My siblings and I have kinda drifted apart, so I didn't really feel the need to call them. And my parents I just told next time I saw them (which was for Mother's Day). I knew they wouldn't be excited for me (and they weren't - didn't even say congrats or anything). Because they knew we were planning a DW, and I knew they were going to be upset because of the cost. Also, I was engaged before - six years ago, and I broke it off and they've never really got past that. So they just act like, "meh" re:our wedding. Come one - it's not like I'm Ross (from Friends)! Lol.

(Sorry for the mini-rant)

I got engaged Christmas morning so both of our families knew right away. I actually haven't updated my status on Facebook, I'll probably wait until we get married and update it then. All my close friends already know about our engagement so I would just be updating people that I don't really talk to.

I kind of got that from my family, maybe not the "Meh" but something along the lines of fake excitement. What was really important for me was to tell my best friends and my cousins that I was close with.

Anyways, sometimes it is really awesome to have mini-rants on the forum boards, because it gives release, and keeps you sane to realise that you aren't the only one with those feelings. :)

We got engaged on Christmas morning so it was pretty easy to let all our family know right away. J and I also called our close friends and family and told them. Then I posted it on fb maybe the next day. I wanted people to know and I felt I had already called or seen everyone that I wanted to find out in person first. I actually thought fb was a great way to let everyone else know all at once.

We waited until our close friends and family knew and then posted the change on facebook. I didn't want anyone close to me to find out that way. I also, in addition to changing my status from "in a relationship" to "engaged", changed my actual status to be an announcement of our engagement so that at least people finding out this way could feel like they were purposely being told, and not that they were just stumbling across this new "engaged" status.

I dunno, online stuff like facebook is changing all the etiquette rules. You just kind of have to do what you think is right and are the most comfortable with, and hope for the best!

i have been engaged since last October 2009 and the first thing i wanted to do was change my status on fb - but then i thought about it - there are some people i didn't want knowing etc... so i still haven't changed it but everyone that i did want to know (who were on fb) knows either through phone call or person wink.gif
