Gah! Ladies, I have to do a vent. I think it's my first one so far, but most definitely not the last wink.gif

FI's sister (who is notoriously bad with money) is talking about staying at a "cheaper" resort in Cancun w/her boyfriend. Ok, fine...but that means we'll basically only see her the day of the wedding, and they'll have to pay a day pass fee to come to the wedding, etc etc. Now, I do understand that our resort is a bit on the pricey side, and it's a huge concern of mine (especially with the rack rates that are out right now).

Now, FI's best friend and his girlfriend are ALSO considering staying at the "cheap" resort with FI's sis. Yet another couple that we'll only see on the day of the wedding. Honestly, what's the point of coming if you're only going to be there for the wedding ceremony and reception? I just don't get it!

So now I'm actually reconsidering my choice of resort...maybe will have to switch to something more affordable so more people will be able to stay with us. I don't want to have to, as I'll lose out on my wedding deposit (only $200, but still...)

On top of that, I had a little too much wine Saturday night (wink.gif) and had a heart-to-heart with FI. I asked him if he was disappointed that so many of his friends are not going to be able to make it (he has a TON of friends that he stays in touch with from high school) and he admitted that yes, he's pretty bummed that a lot of his friends aren't going to make it, but he said whatever makes me happy will make him happy. And then he said "I'll marry you on the moon, if that's what you want." Sigh...what a good man I'm marrying.

Celina - I too have had the conversation with my FI with regards to his mates as he has lived in the same place all his life unlike me so has had the same friends for 30+years - he is gutted as his best mate isnt coming so his bro is gonna be his best man. But they wouldnt really go to Mexico if they didnt want to - lol.

With regards to other guests staying elsewhere there are 2 ways to look at it;

1. it wont be quite the same experience with them stayin in an alternative resort but they are still paying out to travel to your wedding and will be with you on your special day. Other people dont have their families travelling with them at all!

2. if someone announced they were getting married abroad and they wanted you to travel with them - how would you feel about the cost?

I know how you feel as we have seen some really luxurious resorts but they are twice the cost of where we are going. We did have to consider other peoples budgets (but we are coming from further afield ie; London) and we went for a cheaper option as we wanted our families there - some people still couldnt afford to come - but we feel we have made the right decision with our hotel. But if i was you i wouldnt change my hotel but go with the other guests staying nearby - you never know it might work out better - you wont have to spend 24/7 with them. You can also arrange to go on trips and do activities with them outside of the resort.

I hope you manage to sort it out and remember its your day you have your wedding where you want it :-) its our only chance to ever be a wee bit selfish..

I'm going to cover the $150 fee for the 10 people who already booked their flights...its worth it for them to save more than double the amt!
Best solution all round really - i dont understand why they are quoting so much. Glad you found a solution to your problem.

Hi celina, we have done the opposite and booked the cheapest we could find so that as many of our friends and family as possible can come, (even though i wanted to go somewhere totally lush and spoil myself rotten!) it still backfired on us as my godparents don´t want to go somewhere not up to their 12star standard, and loads of our friends STILL aren´t coming! Don´t get me wrong, we´re doing this cos it´s what we want to do, our immediate family and some friends will be there, and i know we´ll have a great time. it´s just when people swear they´ll come, and then make crap excuses, or worse, no excuses and then avoid you!

oops, sorry , my rant went off in a different direction, anyway i just wanted to let you know i feel your frustration!!!!!

I only have one friend attending - everyone said 'i'll be there' when we announced we would be travelling abroad even though we said it would be about £1000 for 2 weeks (based on prices for the previous years) - then they all started dropping like flies when we announced it was £1180 - you would have thought we had said it was £2000 - though we have 18 of us travelling in total inc our immediate family - so a nice number after all. Oh what hotel did you opt for?

We´re going to the Riu Tequila, it looks like great value for money.

My biggest gripe is that my best friend who has always said that wild horses wouldn´t keep her away from my wedding, wherever it is, has now gone very very quiet on the subject, having said she´s very unlikely to make it. i understand why she can´t come, just not why she´s now avoiding me! My FI´s best mate has given us a variety of excuses.... his girlfriend can´t get time off work being the main one, lack of finances etc (although they have a brand new car sitting on the drive and no mortgage!) but really i know that he could come if he wanted to, and stay with some other single guys, and mainly, he´s not coming cos his girlfriend says no. nice. to be honest, i´m quite glad she´s not coming, shame about him tho!

It looks lovely. I have been to a couple of RIU hotels in Europe and always think they are 1st rate and great value for money. Thats why i like our choice as well cause of the value for money sometimes i wish i had gone somewhere uber luxurious but we have been to our choice of hotel before so know what to expect and we loved it.
Its the excuses people use that frustrate me more than the not coming.
