Okay, so a while back someone in this thread had posted very nice detailed instructions they received from the Dominican Consulate of the steps to completing the legal documents, and I have searched this thread for some pages now, and can't find it! Do any of you lovely ladies have an idea as to what post I am talking about? Is it you?!!

 

My Fiancé is in charge of the documentation for the wedding (about the only thing I've "allowed" him to do), and the post was such a nice instructional I thought it would be good to share it with him.

Valid passport.*

Original Birth Certificate (two photocopies to be sent to our office).

Notarized Single Status Affidavit for each one (original and one copy to be sent to our office).

If previously married, copy of legalized/sealed Divorce Act or Death Certificate (two copies to be sent to our office).**

There is a mandatory 10 months waiting period, for women, after divorced for re-marrying.

Certificate adoption, if applicable (send two copies to our office).

Parental authorization, if applicable (send two copies to our office).

Passport photocopies of the witnesses (if you do not have witnesses, hotel/resort will provide them).

* These documents, except for passport or photo ID and witnesses information, must be translated into Spanish and legalized by the Dominican Consulate before arriving to the Dominican Republic. It is the couple’s responsibility to have all the required documentation before the wedding date.

***I received this from the Dominican Consulate in Ottawa, seeing as you are in Ottawa you can bring your documents there to have them notarized etc... lucky- I had to find a lawyer to do it(which is another option). These documents must be notarized and translated no earlier than 3 months prior to your wedding. You can either mail them to Carolina prior to your wedding so she can check them to make sure you have everything, or you can bring them down with you--- which is what I am doing, I don't trust sending these documents overseas, I would rather hand them too her just to be safe.. I may fax her copies of what we have...

 

Good Luck, I am sending my stuff out on Monday, it apparently takes only 5 days.... you are brave trusting your fiance with this : )

Thank you very much for expressing your interest in visiting the Dominican Republic. We are pleased to respond to your request of information on getting married and we hope your wedding in the DR will be memorable and will give you both happiness and complete satisfaction.

 

In order to celebrate your wedding in the Dominican Republic the bride and groom will need to provide the following documents:

 

•Valid Passport*

•Original Birth Certificate short or long version*

•Single Status Affidavit & Death or Divorce Certificate**. (Original and notarized).

•Four witnesses over 18 years old. Two of them must not be relatives to the bride or groom ( hotel can provide them free, if necessary)

•Translation into Spanish of the Birth Certificate, Single Status Affidavit and Widow or Divorce Act. ( Can be done at the Embassy for fee)

•Legalization of the Single Status Affidavit, Widow and Divorce Act by the

Consular Section of this Embassy.

 

If you are able to sign your Single Status Affidavit in front of a Dominican Consular representative (at this Embassy or your nearby Dominican Consul), you do not need to notarize it with a Canadian notary. Please book for an appointment in advance by calling or writing to our Consular & Tourism Section Staff, Glenis R. Guzman [email protected], Maria Amalia Leyba [email protected] will be pleased to help you on this matter at anytime, either by email or by phone at 613 569 9893 ext 232 or 229 respectively.

 

(*) For legalization purposes at this Embassy, a photocopy of your passport and Birth Certificate will suffice. The latter does not need to have your parent's name on it. However, you must bring all your documents to the Dominican Republic, including those already legalized with us and their originals.

Legal Fees in USD:

The cost to translate a document is 40$ per document

The cost to legalize a document is 100 $ per document

 

This fee is related to:

40$ x 4 to translate both Birth Certificates and two Single Status Affidavit=160$. 100$ x 2 to legalize two Single Status Affidavit= US100$, If any of you are not divorced o widowed, the total amount to pay to legalize and translate your wedding documents are $360 USD.

On the other hand, if one of you is divorced or widowed, the person concerned should pay an additional US100.00 in order to legalize the Divorce or Widow’s Certificate and US$40 for its translation into Spanish. Therefore, they will have to pay an extra US$140 for each divorced or widowed candidate. In order words, if either the bride or groom is divorced or widowed, the total amount to pay to legalize their documents will be US$500.00; if both (bride and groom) are divorced or widowed, they will have to pay $640 USD.

 

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

 

Please take into account the following facts before legalizing and translating your documents or even planning your wedding:

 

1. Once your documents have been legalized by this Embassy or by a Dominican Consulate they will be valid only for three (3) consecutive months from the legalization date, so take this into consideration before sending your documents for legalization.

 

2. A divorced bride cannot get married until 10 months have passed after her official divorce date, unless her intended husband is the same person that she has been divorced. If this is your case, please keep in touch with us at 613 569 9893 ext 232 or 229, as there may be new legal changes on this matter on the Dominican Republic or if your divorce decree or judgement has stayed that you has been legally separated for at least 10 months. In that case, the Civil State Officer in the Dominican Republic through your wedding coordinator, might take this condition into account and could give a waive to the divorced bride based on that fact. (Please contact your wedding coordinator or us help you find out about your special condition). If a waive is given, you will have to translate also your divorce decree or judgement in order to get married in the Dominican Republic because there it is proved that you have been legally separated from your divorced husband more than 10 months.

 

3. If any of you had changed legally your names or last names, so that they will be different from the ones indicated on your birth certificate, you have to send that legal document to us for translation and legalization because your Dominican Marriage Certificate will come out on the name of the person indicated on the birth certificate, unless there is a legal document that change those names or last names for the bride or groom. If that it is your case you will have to send US$140.00, in addition to the above mentioned fees to legalize and translate that extra document.

OMG!!! I'm really starting to freak out, I really don't know where to send my documents because I called WEDO and there telling me to send them to Texas.....I don't want to send them to texas! Thats bullcensored.gif!! Urghhhhhhhhh....................Carolina still isn't emailing me back, I need to know a estimate time of the ceremony, my boss is staying at the dreams and is coming over to do hair and for the wedding!! But she won't tell me, How is god's name am I going to get ahold of her down therehuh.gif? I want to cry, I think I just might.

 

I need to get my docs done right now, like yesterday now and I'm freaking out hard core........I want to go on vacation from my wedding plans sad.gif
