Question...

Recommended Posts

My fiance and I will be married in a private civil union some time late next month here in MD -- haven't chosen that date yet. We are having our "real wedding" April 2011...my questions are...

Should we exchange rings next month or 2011?

Also, since we'll already be married will our Jamaica wedding be just a symbolic ceremony or is it renewal of vows?

I'm sure there are more to follow, but those are the tops on for now....

Thanks in advance!

Hi!

To answer your questions:

1. Rings, I think you can do however you want; I don't think the ring exchange is important for legal purposes. You can do the ring thing twice with the same set or rings, you can have two sets (if your budget allows) or you can just do it on the "big day" -- really up to you and how big of a deal you want to make your legal wedding.

2. Renewal of Vows (ROV) and Symbolic ceremony, for pricing purposes, are the same. It sounds like you would rather a symbolic ceremony considering you are calling it your "real wedding." If you ask specifically for an ROV, the wording in the ceremonial script may change a bit (i.e. "would you 'continue' to take 'said bride' to be your lawfully wedded wife...").

Thanks a bunch...I never thought of doing it twice. We've already purchased them -- so we can definitely do that.

Symbolic ceremony...is that wording different??

I agree, it's totally personal choice on how much of an event you want your legal day to be. If it were me, I would wait to exchange rings at your 'real' wedding ceremony in Jamaica, which would be considered a symbolic ceremony since you've already done the legal part. We look at the legal day as paperwork for the most part & will exchange rings at our DW and celebrate that date as our anniversary.

Good luck deciding!

I believe so. A symbolic ceremony means it is the exact same thing as the real deal...without being legally binding. So in the symbolic, it will look to your guests as if you are doing it for the first time whereas an ROV may sound like you are doing it twice (i.e. 'renewing the vows').

Most places get it though, so if you tell them you want it to be symbolic it will be done. Some places will even let you do script out your whole ceremony for a symbolic so you can really personalize it.

Although you can exchange rings twice--since the legal day is just for paperwork purposes I would save the exchange of rings until the symbolic ceremony. My FI & I are having a legal ceremony at home but we won't be exchanging rings until our symbolic ceremony.

I attended my FI's sister's wedding which was a bengali muslim wedding. On her wedding day was when she got her engagement ring for the first time and then they exchanged wedding bands at their reception the following day. I was actually buying my FI an engagement ring at the same time he was buying me mine! So now we each have a ring. I think to stay true to his familiy traditions, we may exchange the engagement rings at our legal ceremony and then exchange the wedding bands at our DW.

Happy planning! It's a personal choice. We are thinking of having a civil union here first in December (for income tax purposes lol). Our actual wedding is in Jamaica in January. I amnot counting our civil wedding as our wedding date.
