Question Cupcakes Anyone?

So i was having two thoughts about wedding cake. For one thing I'm not that crazy about cake to begin with. BUT my dad seems really upset by the idea of us not have a wedding cake.

The Hilton charges either 10/pp or a 3/pp "cutting fee" if you bring your cake in from outside... so with let's say 50 people that's a $500 cake! So this brings me to my next point - cupcakes.

A) Do you think if we served individual serving/ wrapped (therefore no plates or forks needed) cupcakes I could talk the Hilton into waiving the $3/pp "cutting fee." At this point there would be nothing to cut and they couldn't even say that we would need their plates and service...

B) I just like the idea of cupcakes - a friend even said that you can buy these tiered cupcake trays to put them together in the shape of a cake!

So on that note, any recommendations for bakeries? I wonder if cupcakes would be more or less expensive. I feel like then should be less... I mean who's ever heard of a $10 cupcake!?! Even here is Los Angeles that's outrageous!

I love the cupcake "cake" idea.
Here is a link to a pic to make it look more like a cake.

You can even do a cutting where you and the fh just cut a cupcake in half so your dad won't miss out on that part.

We aren't cake people either so we are going to do pie and a table full of bulk candy.

I like the idea. HOWEVER, actully cupcakes can be more money depending on the design you choose. You have to remember they would have to cut and decorate several cakes versus just one. So overall you could spend more money. If the Hilton charges a cake cutting fee then it may even out in the end.

this might be cheesy... but Costco and City Club (Sam's Mexico) has cupcakes that are pretty good. You could decorte them your selves?

Isn't it funny how when a wedding happens people get all weirdly traditional? Like your dad and cake - you don't even know if he eats it but he's gotta have it there. I'm surprised by my family - my mom has never looked at her guest book from her wedding but if I don't have one at mine it might be the end of her world.

Back to the real topic of cupcakes - to keep costs down you might just have them all frosted in one plain color then accent the stand with fresh flowers. You could also plunk a strawberry on each one.

Tammy, good point... I wonder what the cost would be if I don't tell them it's for a wedding!

Lala,
I like your idea of just decorating with a few flowers and maybe a strawberry! I was also thinking that maybe I could have them just frost half in one color (white?) and half in another (TBD?). Plop some flowers around them and wah-la! Instant cake!

I know, it is really weird how traditional people become. I think a lot of it is "what would people think!?!" though, which is so annoying. Nobody seems to ever even eat the cake at wedding I've been to in the past... oh well... if the man wants cake then cake he shall have (possibly little cakes in cups though!)

Kashmira,

I LOVE the cupcake idea! And arranging them on a stand like that with flowers will be beautiful and should surely suffice your dad.

Further to the above suggestion, I've had cakes from Costco before and they're sooo good and VERY reasonably priced! So that may definately be something to consider!
