Marriage License Info (maui)

Like all US locations, Hawai'i requires licensure for all marriages. However, in the usual "hang loose" Hawai'i lifestyle obtaining your license can be easy, enjoyable and even fun! On Maui, the State of Hawai'i has authorized independent contractors to issue marriage licenses. Licenses are immediately valid and yet another indication of the "hassle-free" nature of getting "Maui'd."

 

Hawaii has NO waiting period. At this time, there are NO Blood tests required. If you were divorced less than 60 days of date of ceremony, written proof is required. Otherwise, just the date is required at time of application.

 

You will need an appointment with an authorized licensing agent to apply for your marriage license. This license may be used on any island and is valid for a period of 30 days. You and your spouse-to-be must go together to the appointment. You each must present a valid picture I.D. (drivers license or passport), and applicants 19 or under must have written parental or legal guardian permission.

 

The license fee is $60.00 payable in *cash only* directly to the licensing agent. This is your legal document & you must take it with you to your ceremony. Your Minister/Officiant will ensure all is filled in & signed, then he/she will forward to the state for filing.

 

Your Marriage License will be mailed to you within 90-120 days. You may opt to receive your license earlier by filling out & mailing in a form (which you will receive from your licensing agent at meeting).

You may fill in the License Application at home, however, use ONLY Black Ink, fill in completely, DO NOT SIGN. This will be signed in front of the licensing agent. DO NOT type this form.

You can also request a "rush" on your marriage license. From what I remember it was $10 and $5 for each additional certificate. It says it will arrive in 6 weeks but took 3.5 for mine to arrive.

I'm glad you have this thread because I read the Hawaii State thingie bob and I could have sworn it said $60 but when I asked my wedding coordinator why she was quoting me $65 she said it had been raised! I thought maybe she was trying to get $5 extra out of me, haha... I know now she's far too honest to do that, but it was our first phone conversation when she told me the license fee so I didn't know I could trust her like I do now!

I was married in Maui on October 18, 2009 and I got my license last Friday. I didn't fill out a rush or anything. I thought this might be helpful if anyone is curious what the current timeline is.

We got Maui'd April 7th, 2010 and (finally) received our certificate in early July. We also didn't do a rush- but do know it takes longer than certificates on the mainland. I think that's called "island time"

It's driving me crazy... Everyone wants to refer to me with my new last name - but legally it's not changed because I don't have the certificate. Sooo still my original name on everything I sign or say. Married on June 7th -- have a while to wait yet.

I know..I feel the same way! Got married on June 17th & everyone has been calling me by my married name. Then I have to explain to them the real meaning of Hawaiian time & why I can't change it yet Hopefully it'll come soon!
