i also am getting married at RIU.. Although I do think Dreams is a much nicer resort and have a great wedding coordinator and packages.. my group like to dance a have fun at night. they are all staying for the week and we had to have a disco on the property so RIU was for us... It all depends on what you think you and your guests will enjoy... you will have fun no matter what!

I haven't been to either place to see it for my own eyes and my heart was set on Riu for any vacation that I was going to take to Cabo. Then after reading about the rooms, it seemed they only had three options and I have family coming down with three people to a room in some cases. The pics looked like the bathroom was open. It just seemed that the RIU was designed for adults only but I LOVE the fact there are 4 bottles of alcohol in the room for you at the RIU:) But the main reason I chose Dreams is because the reps at Dreams were responding to my e-mails. The Rep at RIU took weeks to respond back to my requests for packages, pics of recent weddings and any other questions I had. It seemed like they did not want to be bothered until you actually booked. Plus it was much more expensive to have a wedding there. I also like the setup of the pool at Dreams.
My friends that are all coming are all about partying but it doesn't have to happen at the resort. I figured, each town is only a 20 minute cab ride from Dreams and if my guests want to party, we can all go into town to Cabo Wabo and have a great time.

From a photographers perspective I would go with Dreams and here are a few reasons. There is less chance of background chatter (jet skis, people, vendors) and that is very important. Shooting south-west down the shoreline at Dreams makes it look like you are on a deserted beach. The gazebo is a step away from the beach. No afternoon drunk loogans hanging over the edge of the pool hooting during your weddings. The WC's at Dreams are well... a dream to work with (Mariana y Jessica).

As for people in "Bikinis" in your photos. This was not a problem at all at Rui. They were very careful to make sure people did not walk near where my reception is. There are jet skis and parasailers, but they are futher down the beach. Personally I think the view from the beach at Riu is much nicer than dreams. You get to have lands end in your shots. Every single person who sees my pics comments on the view.
Personally I think you will be happy either place, I choose Riu and was so glad I did. It is a large resort, but I disagree about not getting to know the staf. We had the same bartenders and wait staff all week. The staff was amazing and super helpful. There are 2 pools one one side they play music and the other pool area has no music. There are 2 main bars. One has a piano bar so it is more romantic, the other plays lounder more dance music. I think you get the best of both worlds!

You Riu girls are right- the Riu is definitely what you make it to be. I hope my post didn't sound critical of Riu- we LOVED our stay there and would go back in a second. I think because we were only there for 4 days we didn't get the full experience and perhaps just were a little jaded by the service when our room was wrong- it was fixed though...
A couple things about Riu that are great- the view is unbeatable! I hadn't been downtown for a while, and went with my parents one day. I have to say I was a little sad not to have the great arch and rocks in the background when after all, I was getting married in Cabo! I also love the bonfire option they provide. I think Stephanie is doing that? I will be interested to see the pics- looks like so much fun.
It's definitely just a personal preference, and just like any vacation, one person's experience can differ from another. I think another thing that made the Riu seem so shockingly party-ish was that the first half of our vacation was spent at Presidente Intercontinental, then we moved to Dreams half way through. However, PI is about as laid back and quiet as it gets so to go from that to thr Riu was definitely a huge change of pace...but I think that was what made that vacation so fun. We got to totally chill for a couple days, but then went and partied at the Riu!
Good luck with your decision. Just remember, it's your wedding and it's your party- do what YOU want. If you like the feel of a big resort and want to be close to town to party (not to mention that the Riu is breathtaking....) then pick the Riu, despite what your family says. Or, if you want something a little more laid back and smaller, pick Dreams. Go with what you feel is right for you...
By the way, Sarah, I LOVE your new sig pic!
