Don't like wedding cake - doing a brownie sundae bar

Recommended Posts

I am not a huge cake fan (wedding, birthday, or otherwise.) My favorite dessert in the world is a hot brownie topped with cold ice cream and drizzled with caramel, hot fudge, and a little raspberry compote. Maybe topped with some whipped cream, and just for the heck of it... a cherry on top.

My mom about died when I said I didn't want a wedding cake. "But you HAVE to have a wedding cake! What will people think? You will disappoint so many people. I always look forward to the wedding cake!" (She can be a bit extreme sometimes.)

I just think that since I'm having a non-traditional wedding, that I don't need to do things just because they are "tradition." And since I don't care much for cake, I think this is a much better idea.

I'm thinking about having a brownie sundae bar set up with all of the above mentioned items (maybe also some nuts) and letting the guests serve themselves however they like their brownie sundae,

Has anyone done anything like this or another non-traditional dessert in lieu of the wedding cake? Were any guests disappointed? Did you feel like you missed out on a right of passage (cutting the wedding cake)?

... Maybe instead of cutting the cake, we'll have a "scooping of the ice cream" moment/picture.

Ok well I am a major cake fein so a cake was a MUST for me wink.gif But I didn't want just a traditional layered cake and went with a small cake for cutting purposes and pics atop a tier of cupcakes. This allowed us to have our tres leches cake, then cupcakes in different flavors -- chocolate with white buttercream frosting, red velvet with cream cheese frosting, white with chocolate buttercream frosting, and tres leches with white buttercream frosting. So basically we had a variety for everyone to enjoy!

Now along with that we also had chocolate covered strawberries (white and milk chocolate), mexican wedding cookies, along with choco chip, white choco macadamian, and oatmeal cookies -- so it was a spread of desserts that allowed for everyone to have a choice.

You can certainly do a variety of desserts or just pick the one you LOVE -- do what you want, if you dont care for cake, don't feel like you have to do it. Brownies would be so much fun! And if your family is pressing for a cake how about just a small one for pictures?

the only thing i'd be worried about it if they make brownies in jamaica! it might not turn out at all like you are expecting if their version of brownie is different from yours.

as far as mom and friends/family reactions to it, screw it! its your wedding, do what you want!

That sounds amazing! I love brownies too! :)

I would just make sure that no one has allergies (especially to nuts) because with buffet type meals, things always get mixed up with the other foods. Other than that, I think it sounds great. It's your wedding, do what you want! :)

A brownie sundae bar sounds really awesome! I would MUCH rather have that than a cake. My only worry is that with a buffet comes a bit of a mess (at least for me!) and I know I would get it on my white dress.

As for your mom, tell her that you value her opinion, but that it's important to you that you actually LIKE your dessert and you're not going to choke down yucky cake just for tradition's sake.

A wedding I went to in June in MA served a brownie with ice cream - no cake at all, no photos. They also had a cookie station with a variety of cookies that the bridesmaids made. I think the no cake thing is fine! A friend of mine also went to a wedding where it was only different types/ flavors of pies.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
