We're thinking the same thing. So then do you tell your guests When I told my Mom that we would be legally married already she thought it was kind of strange to do it that way. But it seems to be a great way to reduce costs and stress. But if my Mom wants to pay for the translation I'm all for it. I really don't care either way; was just trying to make things easier!

No I wouldn't tell your guests, then no one will make you feel like your wedding day is anything less then it should be. The resorts are very discreet, no one has to know your already married, but you. Your mom's reaction will be what many peoples reaction will be. So many girls on another dr forum talk about how the judge gets there when she gets there and you just sign the papers before or after depending on if the judge is running behind, so really what is the difference of doing that or doing it at home before you come? The translation is expensive and the judges fees are over $600.00 US.It also gives you a reason to celebrate twice every year!

My sisters friend did this when she was married. She did the legal vows at home with her maid of honor (my sis) and the best man. They didnt tell any of the family members and the wedding they had in Curacao looked like the real thing. I dont think its weird at all. It seems like a waste of money to pay so much to get married there.

I'm dealing with the very same dilemma. I've only spoken to my fiance, matron of honor and my mother about it. Mom says its sounds like we'll be paying a lot of money for just an expensive party if we get married beforehand. BUT, most insurance companies only give you 30 days from the date of your marriage to get added on to your spouses insurance without having to worry about pre-existing conditions, etc. So, with the length of time it takes to get the paperwork back from the DR, it only seems logical to take care of it ahead of time to me. Although I think it will be weird, since I won't wear my wedding dress for the justice of the peace. But, maybe I'll get emotional and cry then ... and won't have to worry about that when I have my dress on in the DR!

Hi!

This is where my fiance and I are confused. We would like to married once and we want to be married catholic.
So we thought we could tough out all the paperwork and the stress and just get it done. But from what I am reading - its costs alot? If anybody has the answer to that.. please help.

Or we will have to go down and get married civil then come back and get married catholic with our own church. Prefer to only do it once though...

Hey, i'm not a DR bride anymore, but when I was the info I found was that the fees for the judge had gone up and were around 500 bucks, and then translating it all was pretty spendy and time consuming. I know one couple waited 3 months for their marriage certificate

I was married before so the price is even higher (more docs to translate etc.). We are getting the civil ceremony out of the way at home, then it's the symbolic wedding in the DR.

Hi Julie!

You can get married in a Catholic ceremony in the DR. Most any resort will be able to help you with the logistics. The Catholic ceremony IS a legal ceremony. However, it will take some time to get the paperwork back. Check out WEDO .:: Taking care of your legal documentation for your Dominican weddings for all he paperwork info (from what I understand, this is one of the best palces to have your paperwork translated, etc. Also check out the forum area at Debbie's Dominican Republic Travel Pages - 1,000's of Resort Reviews, Tour, Scuba and Wedding Information ... as there is a section about DR weddings and specifically Catholic ceremonies are discussed in-depth.

We decided to do a quiet civil ceremony in the US and a Symbolic Ceremony in the DR based on the cost and amount of time for paperwork -- hoping no guests will know the difference.

We will still consider our DR wedding to be our "real" wedding, as that is when our friends and family will be with us to witness our vows.

Hope this helps!
