Default Veil length

Does anyone have an idea of what the best veil length is for an outdoor wedding? I thought I had read that longer veils were better to avoid it flying in your face the whole time, but then when I went wedding dress shopping was told shorter (fingertip) was better.

I've also heard you could have weights of some sort attached to the bottom of your veil to keep it from flying around - has anyone tried this?

i really think it all depends on your personal preference. i think the shots where the veil is flying are pretty cool, and dramatic! but i wouldn't want it all over the place during my ceremony, i'd like to be able to see! i got "waltz" length, it comes to about mid-calf on me. i didn't take into account the outdoor factor - i just went with what i liked w/my dress. i think there is a variety of girls on this site - some w/no veil all the way to some having a cathedral length veil.

Ya, it's all what you think looks best with your dress. I think the longer ones might get a little annoying if you're outside and it's windy, but even that's a stretch if it's the one you love! Ya, I've heard about weighing down your veil. I think just with the bead work it can be weighted. I agree with Ann - those shots of the veil up in the air can look really pretty and dramatic. It's just personal prefrence :)

When i did my site visit of Dreams, I watched two brides with the cathedrial length veil and they really stuggled with them! The one girl actually had her father wrap the veil around his arm as she walked and the MOH held it down through the ceremony! Now..Dreams is an extreme case becasue the gazebo is out on a cliff sort of thins, surrounded by water...so it is a bit more windy there then anywhere else.
After seeing those two girls...I will be going with an elbow length veil with some sort of weight on the bottom (as suggested by Claudia Rodriguez, our photographer)

if you get pearls at the bottom of it I am sure it would weigh it down, or even some rhinestones.

personally i love the long, flying around all over the place veils :) its probably annoying for the ceremony but for the bride/groom pics its fun. and it can always come off! most brides dont wear them for the reception anyway.

Mine was chapel length. It was a little annoying but not that bad. I wore it for the ceremony and for photos afterward... until I was walking down the beach and a wave came up and got it wet and sandy!

at that point, I ditched it...

Thanks for the info! This helps a great deal. I think I'm just having nightmares about being that bride who keeps getting whipped in the face through the whole ceremony!

Meh - if that happens just ditch the veil! That's my favourite part about DW - no rules!

that was not a problem at all. My veil had an organza trim which may have made it a little heavier.
