Deadly swine flu virus in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies,

For anyone who is getting married in the Maya Riviera, are any of your guests freaking out about the terrible flu that's going around? I'm getting emails and text messages from a lot of my guests and it's making me feel SO stressed out.

Ugh, I haven't heard anything about a flu! I hope it's gone by the time I get down there!

Maybe put some purell in your OOT bags or hand some out? I would just remind people to be safe and be sensible about hygiene, and everything should be okay - just like it you do at home!

You're right - I'm sure it'll be fine. Perhaps I'll just go and get a flu shot to be safe. The media tends to take a sensational stance on these types of things. I read this article on CBC.ca (a Canadian news company) and it just has me fussing a little. Since the flu seems to be in Mexico City, I'm sure we'll be fine.

don't you love sensationalism by the world news media?

as mentioned, its isolated far away and most of your guests can smile while relaxing on the fine beaches here with no worries at all!

Chances are everyone will be fine, but I'm sure using good hand hygiene can't hurt.

FYI - I'm pretty sure a flu shot won't protect you due to the different antigenic strain of this Influenza virus (swine) compared to the human flu virus antigens which are used in the annual flu shot, so I probably wouldn't bother if I were you.

So far its just an advisory and warning to becareful. Apparently there have been no new cases in several days. But I was worried about my guests... One guest already posted a warning on his facebook page... come on, don't need to scare people. He did take it down though when we asked, we leave in 20 days dont need a bunch of fearful guests. I'm sure there would be a much stricter warning if it was a serious threat to tourists.

i just sent this email below to my guests to ward off any freaking out on me about our trip since we leave in 2 weeks. i'm not concerned but will just be more careful not to get sick. alcohol will kill all germs anyways wink.gif

Not to scare anyone but just so everyone is aware of the situation. thanks to agnes for the heads up

This doesn't seem to be located in the Mayan Riviera so we should be okay.

But please take precautions from getting sick anyways: - wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, consider getting a flu shot, stay at least 3 feet away from anyone who seems noticeably sick.

More importantly if you do happen to get sick in mexico, see a physician when you get home, just in case

I was on the pandemic project at Nexen so i'm an "expert", any questions, let me know :)

CTV.ca | Canadians told to be on alert for Mexico illness

From the article:

"The illness appears to have infected hundreds in south and central areas of Mexico, but not the tourist areas on the coast. According to a report in a Spanish-language newspaper in Mexico, the regions affected include: the capital region (Mexico City); San Luis Potosí; Oaxaca; and Baja, California."

"At this point, no cases have been confirmed outside of Mexico.

Anyone who has returned from Mexico within the last two weeks and is suffering the following symptoms should contact a physician:

* fever

* cough

* sore throat

* shortness of breath

* muscle and joint pain

"Rau said he doesn't think this illness report should deter any Canadians from travelling to Mexico, but they should consult a travel health clinic at least six weeks before they travel.

"At this point, people going to Mexico should think about getting the flu shot, if they haven't had one already. But I don't think there is any preventative measure they can take unless Canada issues a travel alert saying not to go."
