So my mother is either crazy paranoid or there is something going on...She called me tonight all concerned as someone at work told here that Mexico is angry with the U.S over somthing and that travel there is not advised....can anyone shed some light on this?? Or atleast reassure me that my mother is totally wrong and paranoid (as usual)

and no i haven't heard anything about travel not being advised to mexico. a lot of people are scared of mexico because of things they have heard about happening there. I don't think they realize it's a very diverse country & even if there are some scary areas, riviera maya is not one of them. Just like in the US, there are some cities I would not drive around at night & some places where I wouldn't need to lock my doors.

A few of our guests were worried about traveling to mexico. Once they go to riviera maya, they felt totally comfortable. Especially in the hotel. I feel much more comfortable there then i do in in my own town at night. But, just like any tourist area, you have to travel smart.

I think all of our mexico-leary guests will be going back now that they have experienced how great it is.

I do not think there is a problem. Please worry not. Maybe to travel to some parts of Mexico is not advised, just like it is not advised to go by yourself at midnight into an alley, dark one that is! I live in Cabo and it's such a nice weather you would love it. Anyway worry not, go to Riviera Maya and have a blast! Congratulations!

There is always over-hype with Mex & the US. Any time there is one slight robbery or any issue it is blown out of proportion here even when it is way less than we have in LA, SF or any city in the US. My mom drove all my wedding stuff across the border today and had no issues. She is 300 miles down so far and issue free.

Do no let your mom watch the LA Border Patrol thing they are doing online as it is over exagerated. Yes, there are issues due to the economy here and so many trying to go home and they are stuck in the border cities so the crime rate is up in the border cities (as it is in our cities due to the economy). I made my mom promise not to stop in the first 100 miles, yet she stopped in Tecate where she crossed, TJ on accident, Rosarito due to a storm and mud slides, ensenada for FMT filing, and stuck after that with weather related accidentes and wash outs. All is same as usual. My family has lived there 3x and driven the "dangerous roads" dozens of times. Feel safe, it is the same as being in any tourist city all over the world. Be smart, be safe, be watchful!

I think your mom may be referring to the incredibly high crime rate in several border towns. Drug cartels seem to be killing everyone (mainly police officials and other drug dealers) and are trying to rule the roost in those towns. Cancun has some problems with drug cartels too, but no tourists (or any average citizen, for that matter) have been involved, that I am aware of...nor is this problem prevalent in the hotel zone. Also, a high-ranking government official was murdered recently. People speculated that one of the drug cartels was responsible for that. That was in Mexico City though. Mexico City and the border of Mexico and USA are VERY far from Cancun and Riviera Maya. I don't think people realize that when they watch the news.

I live in Cancun and, just like any city in the US, there is crime. If you use common sense (like you would at home), you should be fine visiting this area though. I wouldn't cancel or change my plans if I were you. Tell mom to relax too. ;-)
