My dress was a Casablanca dress (same designer as Jessalyn's, I think). Anyway, mine was about $850...but that's because I had it special ordered so that the beading on the bottom woulnd't be affected when they had to hem it. I think the price before that was closer to $750-ish.

The point is that I think they have some lovely dresses and would definitely be worth checking out if you're looking to keep it under $1000.

Also, not sure if you're just wanting to keep the cost of the dress itself under that price or if you're wanting the cost w/ alterations to be included in that as well. Just remember that alterations are super expensive...even if the dress isn't terribly elaborate or detailed. My alterations were about $300 and all they had to do was take up the straps and make the bustle! (they ended up NOT having to hem it) Seriously, that's it - two straps and three little ribbons later I'm forking out half the cost of the dress itself! weddings....

Here's the link to Casablanca if you want to check it out.

Welcome to CasaBlancaBridal.com

My dress is in the Spring 2003 collection - style # 1631 if you're curious!

David's Bridal sale has been extended-I think its possible that they extend it all winter? They have a lot of really nice dresses there too.

[quote=starchild;37297]Okay ladies, you've convinced me. It will remain a surprise until the wedding and I am cool with that. And you're right, other people's opinions do get in the way sometimes!! I have been showing him pics of what I like too, so at most he may know it is one of 5 dresses, but will not know for sure until that day.

gkashmira, thanks for your offer. After discussing this with my MOH she will be flying to L.A. next week to help me get it together.

Go try on a bunch of dresses for your MOH comes. You'll want to narrow down your look at get an opinion on whether you're close or not. Trust those of us who've been through this - you need at least two trips on your own first before you bring someone in (especially someone who's flying in). Also, don't be shocked if what you wind up liking doesn't have ANYTHING to do with the dresses you picked out. I ended up with something ENTIRELY different than I set out to buy.

I am going on Saturday - by myself, lol - to see what I can see. The store I am going to carries every line I have been interested in so far, so I'm hoping that will help me narrow it down. I bet I'll end up with something I didn't set out to buy too!! I'll let you guys know how it goes . . .

Thanks for the info! Honestly I never considered the cost of alterations at all, but I am certain that I will need them so that is something to keep in mind. There are a lot of little seamstress shops where I live, I should start looking in to that. I don't need to have it altered where I buy my dress, do I? I kind of figured any seamstress can hem or take in a dress, but maybe I'm wrong.

I only bought a fancy dress that required fittings once, and that was for a quincenera but I was 15 so my measurments never changed over the course of 8 months, oh how I long for those days!

Your dress is beautiful, I checked it out! So pretty!!! How will I ever decide?

I'm hoping that I won't need alterations, besides the bustle. All the dresses I like have a corset back and you can order maggie sottero dresses in petite, which is 3 inches shorter than normal, so I think I might be okay, keeping my fingers crossed!

I would do the alterations there. You can negotiate things into the cost of the dress and they deal with wedding dresses all day every day so you are less likely to have problems. The costs are very small. $15 to have cups sewn in, etc.

I negotiated a flat rate for the dress so I wouldn't have to worry if I had to do more alterations than expected (which I did, I had one extra fitting).

I see I am a bit indifferent about this topic. When I found my dress, I was by myself but later visited with my BM, then FMIL, and finally my mother from OOT. So technically, FI didn't see me in my dress.

One day however, FI was actually willing to look a gowns and I did try on some dresses. It was great since I got to see he reaction... which was anti-climatic by the way, found out what silhouettes he liked, and he was able to realize why us gals spend so much on the "perfect" gown.

To be honest, you will look completely different with hair and make-up. Plus the emotion of the day will still produce that breath taking moment. Since my FI didn't seemed moved by my dress rehearsal he knows now that he is required to shed at least one tear.

All in all.. go for it! You'll definately get an honest opinion.
