It depends on how pick you are and how much you can see the difference.

My two rings are different Karats - my e-ring is 18k and my band is 14k. I can tell the difference, but I make jewelry. That said, it wasn't enough to make me worry or not love both rings. No one else will notice

Platinum and white gold are different, but not too different.
Platinum is much stronger than white gold. And it has a bit of a more steely colour IMO.
Palladium is completely different colour, so definitely don't go for that...

If I were you I'd get a small simple platinum band online and then maybe later when you feel richer, get something more blingy :)

Good luck!

Hmmmm, that's interesting, I thought palladium was just as white as platinum (from what I've seen).
I know there is a slight difference in color but doesn't it look just as white?

Palladium is harder than white gold and lighter and less expensive than platinum.

In terms of colour, I find the palladium rings I"ve seen have been a lot more steel coloured, like this image, that shows 18K yellow gold, 18K white gold (rhodium-plated) and an 18K palladium ring (un-plated) from the side on:

Palladium can be plated too, but the plating wearing off makes it look greyish, whereas when a white gold ring wears off its plating it looks a little yellow-y or less white...

I really don't think it matters that much, but I do think you want to match your metals.

Check out this link. It has some interesting information comparing the three metals (white gold, platinum and paladium). Keep in mind it came off the internet, so it might not be 100% accurate, but it might help some!

Jewelry, Gems, & Minerals: PALLADIUM VS. PLATINUM RINGS, platinum engagement ring, metals market

That is really good information and I guess I will have to talk my FI into getting a plain platinum band...Thanks a lot though for the information I see it has helped out a few different people!

I have a platinum E-ring and I am having a palladium wedding band made. I was told they will look almost the same but palladium is a bit shiner. I was told not to do white gold because they wear different and I want to get my rings saudered(?) and that trying to rhodium dip the white gold next to the plantinum would be difficult.

My wedding band is being made right now so when I get both together (platinum and palladium) i'll take a pic and post!

Awesome! Please do post a pic when they're side by side. It helps that they'll be fused together too, so that whoever is looking after them can make sure that they look as close to the same colour as possible :)

Hey girls since Jay is a huge jewelry buff and has to know everything about it.. (PITA).. LOL.

So far this is what I have learned from him... Honestly, bling is bling to me.

White gold is not the same white gold in our mothers time. If you took your moms white gold and put it up against something of today... TOTAL DIFFERENCE. Reason being, they don't "hit" it with Iridium anymore and use Rhodium in its place. Rhodium has higher yellow properties than Iriduim which is a true white metal. Hence the reason for taking it in so often to get re-rhodium-ed.

I'm a hairdresser and for the amount of chemicals I use on a daily basis with things like Nickel, Alcolines, and other metal properties that are found everyday in chemical services. Jay obviously had to turn into the jewelery snob he now is. We have seen what and how quick my white gold has changed... so this time around he went with the Platnium for my Ering. I can tell you right now though I have had it for 9 months and only had it buffed once because of my damn scissors compared to in the same period.. my white gold had already been re-rhodiumed.
