Default Taking Non-traditional to a New Level

I am now starting to plan my DW.

Since I am a wedding photographer and am focusing on destination weddings in the future I don't want it to feel like I am working.

I am not one for tradition anyway. I have actually been considering taking her name.

So how about a good brainstorming session? How can I throw tradition out the window and do something interesting?

I was thinking of a symbolic ceremony led by a friend in some Aztec or Mayan ruins. I was also considering in a crazy cave. We're going to have 20-27 people max.

Wow you sound just like us! We both are in IT and neither of us is what you would call traditional. I mean we picked out a James Bond cake we are going to turn into a Indiana Jones cake. Our theme is actually going to be Indiana Jones raiders of the lost ark jungle meets 1940's Hollywood glamor.

We are really thinking about doing the Cosmic ceremony in a cenote. The Cosmic ceremony has some Mayan traditions in it but is not 100% Mayan. Which is great for us as we want to incorporate some of our heritage into the ceremony. For example I am Irish and want to do a the hand binding tradition.

I would love to hear what other ideas everyone comes up with. The more unique the better. Carla

BTW the MX government will not allow you to have your ceremony in the ruins. This is what we originally wanted too.

Josh does this mean you're newly engaged? Or were you always engaged? If it's new, congrats!

Our wedding is kinda non-traditional, but probably not in the ways you're thinking. We're having my brother perform a symbolic ceremony but it's not in a crazy cool location or anything!

I'm excited to see what ideas other people have though!

I'll look in the restrictions the mexican government has on these sorts of things. If they are too much we'll just find another country.

Heather, well, lets just say soon to be engaged. I'm planning on doing it in Europe in the New Year. She's done school in January so the trip is her grad present. I like getting started on these things early.

yeah you definitly can not get married at the ruins. you are not even allowed to do pro photography there.

there are still many other unique places in mexico for a wedding.

Reading about the ruins reminded me of a post Elizabeth Medina made a while ago. Now these aren't really ruins...but I thought it was a beautiful and unique location...and sort of "ruinous" lol!

Anyway, worth checking out maybe? Definitely look at the slideshow she posted as well...lots of great pics of the venue on there.
http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t10667

Also, in this post she lists a lot of the different Hacienda's that she's shot weddings at...so that may be more helpful as far as actual venue info and not just pretty pics. :-)
