Actually the requirement is not usually a US one but that of the foreign goverment.

I always recommend that you get it renewed when it expires within that 6 months. You just never know and the requirements for entry & exit for any country or airline can change at a drop of the hat- it's always best to be safe than sorry. Plus travel insurance will not cover a passport issue.

I have also heard things about it needing to be valid for 6 months after your departure date. I would renew now just to avoid any potential problems.
