karma: 0 | How much is too much to ask guests to pay for an all-inclusive week in Mexico
Hello everyone :)
This post is partially to vent, but also partially to get an idea of what people are paying for an all-inclusive week in Mexico - I've done a bit of searching and I've seen a lot of different prices mentioned by everyone in the forum. My question is: does 1350 to 1500 + taxes seem like too much to ask people to pay? We are going to the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum resort, in April of 2009.
Our original quote from the TA was 1350 + tax, and our deposit deadline was August 31st, 2008. We started to get deposits together last week, and now all of the sudden the plane is full and we have to get a new quote (or move our wedding)....I started stressing big time over this because with the new fuel surcharge I was worried the price would soar. But I looked online and we can get a deal right now for 1500 + tax, so I'm assuming for a group it may be a bit lower. So, I'm thinking the final price may be about $100 dollars more than originally planned. So we start telling people this, to give them the heads up about a new quote, and they all start freaking out on us! I realized that some people would have a set budget in mind, and unfortunatley not everyone can make it, but we are getting some pretty nasty attitude from our family and friends, like this is all our fault....I know we could have gotten deposits together sooner, but we never imagined the plane would be full 10 months ahead of time Now we are getting so much flack I feel really discouraged and want to call the whole thing off, and just get married here. I really don't know what to do, I know the price increase is disappointing, but we are getting criticism to the point of being personally attacked I really didn't think a max price of $1500 was all that bad, but maybe i'm just way off here?

When FI and I were going to go the AI route, I think we were looking at up to about $1800 before getting really uncomfortable. I think $1400 is really reasonable. But maybe that's just me!
Our trip to Cuba was $700 each all inclusive, but that was in cheapo season at the last minute.

That price is not at all unreasonable. IMHO I would set a date and then let people make their own arrangements. That way people can make it a shorter trip, to accomodate money situations or work/school schedules or people can also stay at other resorts in Mexico that may fit their budget better. Unless there is a large group discount you are being offered I personally wouldnt stress about arranging the entire thing for everyone. If they are upset about $100 then they very well may have not intended on going in the first place anyway.

I think $1500 is fairly average. My guests are leaving from two different cities. My Vancouver departures are probably going to be $1689 + $300 in taxes or something of the sort. My Toronto departures will be $1459+ $300.
Don't give up, I've felt that way too.

Let me start off by saying: Remember this is your wedding and it's important to get married where you and your FI want to. It's easy to get carried away trying to cater to everyone elses needs, but trust me it will only cause you more stress. For 7 nights/Junior Suite at the Barcelo Maya Palace (Riviera Maya the price is- $ 1,245.00. Most of our guests are staying a shorter amount of time (3-4 nights) If you have your heart set on a specific location then book it! Trust me, the people that really want to go will book the trip! Don't stress:)

I think those are reasonable prices for sure. My rate from Toronto to Cabo is $1562 (after taxes). Vancouver departures are a couple hundred more. The first quotes I was getting were way up in the 1800's though, so keep looking around! I got quotes from probably 5 or 6 travel agents before I booked (and don't forget that most of them will price match).

That is reasonable compared to what we are paying
I'm coming from the UK and the shortest time is 7 days and that is not much less than the 14 days. Its costing us over £3,500 for 2 weeks and guests if they go for 2 weeks, which most are!, its at least £3,000.
Some have whinged and said its too much to expect people to pay and my response was so thats a no then lol At the end of the day its what we want we understand its a lot of cash but you either come your you don't its pretty simple really.
I haven't had loads of crap mostly because I won't take it and so people know better than to give me it lol
If this is what you want stick to your guns make sure you and FI are on the plane and the rest leave it to them

I think that's a pretty standard cost. Do what YOU want, not what everyone wants. It's yours and FI's day.

I also think it is reasonable. We have been going through the same thing with our guests the price changed a bit we orig thought we would be round 1500 but it is now 1700 they are making comments but most of them are still coming. I was getting really upset before and my FI and I were going to elope a couple of months ago and thought wow we should just do that but now I have decided this is what we want now and ever who comes comes and who doesnt we will miss them.

My daughter's guests were able to stay at EDR for $1864 per couple for 7 nights, plus airfare of about $518 apiece. This made it $1450 apiece for 7 nights, however, most people stayed just 4 nights so the cost for them was $1050 per person, including airfare.
