Yep, may family did -- but only those with International Service (call your provider before you leave to inquire) even had theirs turned on.
Tom had his on, but only to retrieve emails and it worked fine. We have Verizon.

WE all had verizon and you added international for free to your plan. You just pay the roaming charges.
My bill was 100.00 for 10 days in addition to my current bill

While there this weekend, mine automatically went on "International Service." (I have Sprint). I didn't make any calls but I wasn't able to text message at all. Usually in the northern parts of DR, I can make incoming & outgoing calls and texts with no problems (Puerto Plata, Santiago, and even Santo Domingo). J has an iPhone (AT&T) and was able to call his family in Portugal just fine though.

Pretty much all cell phone carriers from the US work in most parts of DR. The only areas where you will most likely have little or no service is in/around the countryside where the signals don't reach those areas since they're by the mountains.

If you have Verizon service with roaming activated before leaving, it working out well in 80% dominican territory. In Punta Cana verizon service is so strong and clear. Juan Guzman | |
