karma: 13 | At Home Reception
Okay so I am about seven months away from my wedding and my fiance decided to plop a whole new set of planning responsibilities on me by asking me if we could have an at home reception after the wedding. This was something we immediatly nixed when we first started planning, but as of right now no one from his family is planning on coming and he just found out that one of his groomsmen got married and is expecting. I think he is starting to feel upset that it will be my friends and family making the trip and now wants to celebrate with them. Even his dad is trying to back out of coming to our wedding, and we know his mom is for sure not coming (keep in mind that until we started dating he had no relationship with his family, I have been pushing for him to renew his relationships)
We live in Virginia, and the majority of my and his family lives in Northern California and Northern Nevada.
The whole idea of planning this, as well as paying for this is overwhelming to me. I know for sure my dad will not pay for an at home reception so unless my fiance's family (who still spell my name wrong on cards) decides to pay for this, we will wind up paying for this. He said we could just have a bbq in a park!!! Men just don't get it do they...
I am torn, because if I was in his situation I would want to celebrate with my family, but I feel like this defeats the purpose of having a family wedding and reception at the resort.
Okay enough of my rant!!!

We had a reception 3 weeks after we got back. We made jerk chicken. No one came to our wedding (our choice). We had our video playing and posted our wedding pics.

We were planning on doing this at first but it's just so expensive that we crossed out the idea. But I think that it CAN be done for cheap but it'll still cost a couple 1000 dollars - food and booze alone will do it. If you have a house with a backyard (or a friend) that can be a good option too. Well at least you get to wear your dress again.

I really don't plan on having one, nor do I want to. The only way I'd consider it is if no one can come to our wedding. Right now, I think all of the "important" people will be able to make it, so hopefully an AHR isn't necessary.

So we are planning for something small once we get back from cabo, approx. 50 people were looking into having it at the Hyatt in Toronto...I don't really want one but my mom insists and is really excited about it so I guess Im not going to take that away from her and besides I'm sure it will b a lot of fun

My finance and I both have large families; However, we decided to only invited immediate family (parents, siblings and their respective families, and grandparents) to Mexico. Thus, we are going to have the full-blown at home reception when we return to celebrate with the rest of them as well as friends.
Surprisingly, I am having the most fum planning this and trying to find ways to save money!

I voted for "yes, something small & simple." Like some others have said, we only invited immediate family & close important friends...and I know some of those important friends probably won't make it (darn baby makers!!). So, IF we do something, it will be very low cost/low key.
