I must be dense, I still can't tell, but is rep points the same as karma, and if not, how did I get my karma points. and where under user CP would I find this info.

nobody knows all the ins and outs of the karma/reputation points, but it seems the more rep you give your karma does go up.
If you go down to the user cp, it should be listed there along with your subscribed posts.
