I've been meaning to post this idea from Martha Stewart since I got on the forum. I've had this saved June/July when I saw it in her mag.
I think its a great idea to have on each table. Its simple to make and Ikea sells these frames for a real great price. Plus you can stain or paint them any way you want. My colors are brown, lime green, and white. I want very rustic features in my decor so I plain to give the frames a light stain wash with a brown color.
Photo Centerpiece
If you're throwing a party for someone's anniversary or birthday, the guest of honor will shine with a set of photo frame lanterns. They consist of three hinged photo frames set around votive candles. The black-and-white photos are printed onto ecru-colored vellum paper, which is translucent enough for the images to be visible by candlelight.
HOW-TO
Disassemble 3 like-sized frames, setting aside their fronts and discarding their backings. Paint or stain wooden frames desired color; let dry. Upload or scan photographs into a computer. With editing software, make the images black and white, and resize them to fit your frames. Print them onto vellum paper with an ink-jet printer. Slip the images into the frames. Using cloth tape, hinge frames together to form a triangle. Stand frames around a candle in a protective glass holder.
Frames form IKEA 3 for $1.99 |

Yes, I plan to place pics of us in them. I've started to sift through pictures of us have them scanned (pre-digital camera) or have downloaded them into one folder on the comp. I still have some time (200 so I haven't started anything else. Ikea always has great sales during the holiday, so if the frames go onsale (I know I'm cheap!) I'll probrably purchase them this year and look for bargins on the Velum paper. But they seem to be pretty easy to make.

The only thing though is almost all of the pictures are horizontal not vertical. I guess I can still print them vertical i think? Are you using all vertical pictures?

let me know if you see the frames go in sale! I guess I am cheap too but I figure that leaves more $ for something else!
These are really nice and I think it would be cool to use pictures of you with your guests over the years as well as pictures with your FI.
It is great that you posted this idea - it is perfect timing since my FI and I were messing around with paper bags and trying to be creative last night! (yes I actually got him to help come up with ideas - vodka works wonders!)

I was thinking of doing that as well. Having pics of us with fam and friends at their tables. I guess it all comes down to how many pics I can gather of the guests.
I imagine you can make them horizontal as well. Maybe both ways, you can 3horizontal pics together and 3 veritcal. I may create a nice change. MS has two sized frames. I think changing it up and not making things look so uniform always looks better.

are you going to use 4x6 frames or 5x7? Are you going to get different colored vellum or white? I don't know what one would look better. I think white but not sure?

Also I want to try to print the pictures in sepia instead of black and white.
I think colored velum would look nice, but i think you should leave the frame natural or white maybe. not sure. I would try it out first.
