karma: 4 | a reception with NO DANCING????
My FI is a really bad dancer! I love him to death and he is great at a lot of things but this is NOT his strong point! We are expecting 30 adults and 9 kids at the wedding (ALL FAMILY!) My family is a pretty fun group but his family is more mello. Do you think it would be strange to have a wedding and not have dancing? I would hate for everyone to be like "all we did was have dinner!!" but then again I think it might be strange to have a such a small group getting their groove on! I am used to larger weddings of a few hundred people! What do all think?
I am considering having the mariachis for the ceremony and cocktail hour and then using an IPOD for the backgroung dinner music. I know that you can purchase speakers for a few hundred dollars that I am sure we would use again when we got back home. I don't want to use a DJ because of the added cost. I am sure that we could use the IPOD IF we decide to have dancing after all.
Has anyone been to a wedding with no dancing? Was it still a good time or was it stange? HELP!

Sarah - I've never been to a wedding w/o dancing. And I would guess that even if you planned not to have dancing, but had music, that people would start dancing anyway. I personally think you should have dancing! Don't you want to dance w/your new hubby on your wedding day? He doesn't have to do anything fancy, just hold you & sway, right?

sarah, i have never been to a wedding w/o dancing either...
remember it is mexico...people get wasted and get their groove on down there...maybe do all the main stuff first and have dancing at the end so people that dont like to dance and older g-parents can elave if they want but those that want to stay an dance, can...

I agree, have some dancing... It'll be fun, and you wouldn't have to have the dancing part for very long if it didn't seem like people were having a good time. (But I'm sure everybody will be)

I second all the above opions. If people don't WANT to dance then they won't but if you have goo dmusic you may find that many people really do what to dance. And it doesnt matter if your FI is a bad dancer - dancing is about having fun not looking good!

Oh i meant to tell you that renting a sound system thru the Hilton is actually pretty cost effective. They have two types one for smaler crowds (like yours) and one for bigger crowds... here's what she write:
"In regards to the music, you can rent a sound system (small or medium
depending on the final headcount - the small sound system is for group under 30 people). The price is $150 and $245 for the medium sound system.
in case you decide you don't want to buy/carry-on/check the speakers you could probaby rent the small sound system for $150...

I have been to a reception where there was no dancing. The wedding was at 11 am so the reception was a lunch reception. I have to say that without the dancing, it didn't seem like as much of a party. We all just ate and left.
It was a bigger wedding and we didn't know that many people so there wasn't much incentive to stick around. If you choose not to do dancing, it'll probably be better bc there are only 30 people and you can just sit around and talk. I'd go with dancing though. At least have the option there so those that want to can.
