I actually do believe her! I also do believe she had a lot of trouble getting anyone to help her. For the past two years I’ve been reading some horrible situations people have been put into while in the DR.
I think it is great that she has put up such a fuss as well! Maybe this will teach people working at these resorts to think twice about stealing from people!
I also believe there are way more, better experiences then bad.
But a story like this prepares us for what we need to look out for!
Now I wonder if I should be leaving my ring home!!

man if this story is true, that SUCKS big time. I plan on taking my ring (granted not 25K but still very special to me) to mexico with me and wearing it the whole time. This ring will never step foot into a hotel security box; ever.

This story is frightening (whether embellished or not)...but I agree with other posts stating that things like this can not only happen in DR but in other poor countries. What is strange about this is that I read a story on another forum about a photographer being beaten & robbed in broad daylight right outside of Majestic Colonial. Is it coincidence that both stories surround Majestic Colonial?

I believe the story. But, I also believe that she is extremely pissed off and possibly exaggerating a little because of her anger.
The only people that cannot get into a room safe is other guests. Have you ever had a problem with your safe? Who do they send up? Usually it's a maintenance guy, someone from the front desk or whoever else is available.
When Karen and I got married at Dreams Tulum I kept our wedding bands in the back pocket of a pair of cargo shorts in my suitcase. I felt way safer having them in there than putting them in the room safe.

It isn't the theft/violence that deters me (I think as a nation Jamaica has more violence) so much as the increasing number of reviews I read of travelers falling ill and the hospital horror stories I've heard. People get ill all over the world, I know. I don't know if it happens more in the DR, or if people write about it more when it happens there but I don't read nearly as many things citing illness outbreaks in other Caribbean/Latin America hotspots.

Here are my blunt feelings on the matter. While I feel sorry for this girl:
1. She's an absolute idiot for leaving her $25,000 ring in the safe.
2. Even if she has insurance, good luck proving that it was stolen.
3. She could sue all she wants, the hotel is not responsible. You leave those items at your own peril.
4. Thank goodness I speak Spanish. If that happened to me I would have calmly (read: screaming at the top of my lungs) told the personnel at that hotel that my crazy Irish husband was going to put everyone in their crappy hospitals from the beating he was going to inflict if someone didn't return the ring soon.
5. This chick is dumb to go on and on about her rights being violated. We are talking about a poor country. They don't give a shit about your rights. They are starving to death. No one cares or is going to feel bad for you. She obviously has some wealth. She should have used street smarts and bribed someone to tell her who had the ring. Or I would have bribed the police. Trust me in those countries everyone can be bought! All she had to do was offer $500 and someone would have found her ring.
*TRISHA PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR BEAUTIFUL RING WITH YOU! ITS NOT WORTH IT GETTING STOLEN OR LOST.*

Well hopefully FH and I and our guests will come back in one piece, and w/o a case of the shits for weeks. lol
It does make me question where to safely keep our wedding bands for the days leading up to the DW.

Obviously none of us know the real story surrounding this situation but I would say take it with a grain of salt. On another forum I visit, there were a couple brides who were there the same week (some getting married and some doing site visits). All their stories were drastically different then the story told here. They were checking out the same day and said that the bride in question was yelling and screaming. The hotel said they would call the police and the bride said that she didn't want them to call the police, she wanted the front desk to just give her the money for the ring right there. As well, the story changed as to whether the ring was 25K or 13K or some other amount. I also remember something funny about her dad or someone getting involved but can't remember it all now. This bride had posted this story everywhere - Facebook, tripadvisor, a couple forums. And then just a while back she deleted all the posts she had made. Which seems odd to me. As well, when the story was published in the paper there was a follow up the next day saying that they had contacted the resort for their side of the story but that the resort couldn't say anything as their lawyers were handling it.
It's too bad the resort doesn't have camera's in their lobby so the real story could come out.

Oh that is TERRIBLE. Whether it was 5K or 25K its terrible to have something stolen from you. Maybe she shouldn't have taken that ring off her finger, I know I wouldnt have even taken it WITH me, but I hope she finds justice. She should contact CNN and all those news people. thieves. My bike was stolen one time :o( Worst feeling. I swear I was driving around the neighborhood for months waiting to see the bastard so I could close-line his a**. Ahh I still think about that bike (lol)
