karma: 3 | Went Dress shopping for the first time...not really into it!
Hi ladies! okay so for some reason I have been putting off going to look for dresses. Partly because I am just so busy w/ work and school and family issues that I don't have free time. The other part if because I just am not motivated. The thought of going does not interest me in the least?
So this weekend I was up visiting my mom and friends and I decided to stop in this boutique up there. First of all, they had some pretty ugly dresses and i can't make decisions to save my life.
So I found only 4 that I was willing to even try on and the whole time I just felt wierd like it just wasn't natural to me. Plus I felt fat and uncomfortable and just not feeling the whole thing.
Is this totally abnormal? Has anyone else gone through this? I never have been one to think about my wedding day or care about my dress and I knew that my dress wasn't a big deal to me, but I just really hate the idea of having to go, try them on, look through those crammed racks and try and tell myself that I like a certain dress when really i just feel like a fat blob!
HELP!!!!

Took me a while to find this thread http://bestdestinationwedding.com/fo...y-dresses.html
You are definitly not alone feeling this way. I bought an off the rack dress partially to avoid having to do the whole thing at a wedding gown shop. I didn't even like checking out veils at david's bridal. I love having my dress, but I did not enjoy shopping for it.

Aw, Michelle -- you have plenty of time!
But I would just try to have fun with it! When I tried on dresses that I WANTED to wear b/c I loved the style, they looked HORRIBLE on me and I was devastated. But I ended up trying on dresses that I didn't like (looks-wise) but when I tried them on, I was really surprised.
The sizing makes all of us brides feel like fat blobs I think b/c they are always so much bigger than what we actually wear. It SUCKS.
I know they say it all the time, but I really do think when you try the right one on, you'll know it!
Good Luck sista!

Have you looked at dresses online? If not, maybe you should try looking online first. Pick out a couple of dresses that you think you'd love to wear & then make an appt to try them on. It helps if you find one bridal shop that carries multiple designers. That way when you go to the shop you can try on more than 1 dress.
Also, if you have the time, wait, duh, you already said you don't have a lot of free time ...lol. Well definitely avoid going to any bridal shop on the weekend. It seems that they are much more crowded then. I went during the week & in the middle of the day & the place was empty. I didn't have to worry about any other people looking at me or what I had on so I was more comfortable.
Another lesson I learned, only go with 1 or 2 people max. The more people you take with you, the more opinions you get!
Maybe your motivation will come when you look online & see something that jumps off the page & has you thinking "I've got to have that dress".
But don't stress yourself out about it. Try to have fun with it as much as you can.
Sorry for going on and on but I hope that helps a bit.

I don't think you are abnormal! My BMs, FI's mom, and even my FI keep asking when I'll go and start looking...I have no desire yet! I'm kind of a procrastinator to begin with but everything else about the planning excites me just not dress shopping yet. I know I have plenty of time but still. Maybe it's the whole idea of being disappointed in not finding the perfect one right off the bat?

Don't worry about not finding the perfect one right off the bat! I wish I could tell you how many shops I went to, how many dresses I tried on, before I FINALLY found "the one". And its funny, because the day I went to order the one that I thought was the one, another dress caught my eye, I tried it on and that became "the one". So take your time & just relax. You'll know when you've found the right dress.

well, i never had fun dress shopping - but i'm not a big shopper in general. i went by myself, and just bought it like i'd buy a pair of jeans. i didn't do the whole gaggle of girls thing that most brides do. just wasn't me! hang in there - you'll find what you're looking for!

You are definitely NOT abnormal. I went through this. I HATED dress shopping! I went several times and there was only one dress I really liked and everybody talked me out of it because it was so formal and everything else about my wedding is casual. I told my Mom that I was only going to go to one more bridal salon and that if I didn't find anything there that I wasn't wearing a werdding gown. I was just going to wear a white sundress. I found a gown I liked and my Mom got it for me. I didn't look at it for months and when I went for alterations it was too tight and I hated it. My Mom already spent over $1000.00 on it so I couldn't even get another dress or she would be upset so I'm stuck with the one I have.
So my advice is keep shopping even though you hate it. Don't settle on a dress just because you don't feel like shopping any more like I did. Only bring 1 or 2 people with you. Do your hair and make up so you feel pretty. You are definitely not a fat blob but I know how you feel, try tanning. I always feel skinnier when I'm tanner.

Morgan, thanks for the link to the other thread. I didn't even think to look first before I posted...I just wanted some quick feedback! I can definately see that I am not alone in this (thanks everyone!!) I think I am going to look online a little bit and in the magazines and then next time just go by myself and see what i think. I figure I will find one eventually. I am just so hard on myself and I'm so afraid too that fiance won't like it....
